Leaves of Grass, My Ass

Republicans have unveiled their awesome new slogan: Change You Deserve. This is the sort of slogan that will make “Together, We Can Do Better” appear to be utter genius.

For one thing, I am really excited to see Republicans re-enforcing the Democratic call for change. They agree that America deserves change, just as we have been saying for years now. Welcome aboard!

Second, it is particularly brilliant that they chose to reify Barack Obama’s campaign message in particular. I mean, he will only be at the top of the Democratic ticket, and has been running on a change message for over a year now. I guess that Republicans figured that instead of challenging Barack Obama’s campaign message, they would just agree with it whole-heartedly.

Third, it was particularly brilliant to unveil a campaign slogan that is already copyrighted as an advertisement for an anti-depressant:

What the GOP doesn’t seem to realize, because they are idiots, is that “the change you deserve” is the registered advertising slogan of Effexor XR, a drug that many of you might have started taking as a result of all the…you know — terrorism. (Hat tip to Bluestem for catching this gem.)

Effexor, also known as Venlafaxine, is approved for the treatment “of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in adults.” Its common side effects are very much in keeping with the world the House Republicans have striven to build: nausea, apathy, constipation, fatigue, vertigo, sexual dysfunction, sweating, memory loss, and – and I swear I am not making this up – “electric shock-like sensations also called ‘brain zaps.'”

So, really, awesome 2008 election slogan, Republicans. Somehow, you made “Together, We Can Do Better,” read as though it was written by Walt Whitman.

Yeah (4.00 / 1)
This is like if Hillary Clinton’s slogan was “Guns and Family Values”.  It makes them look like totally insincere, unoriginal copycats.

John McCain, just like that.

co-opting to blur, not convince (4.00 / 1)
I think their intent was to blur the difference between the two campaigns’ messages…it might be one of the best of the bad strategies available to them.   And, if any voters out there truly believed that R’s would “change” anything, that’s a bonus.

In other words, if your candidate is saying something original, you start saying it too….you won’t get the positives (i.e. nobody will believe you will make the change) but you can possibly deny your opponent the benefit of the positives (thought bubble:  “both of them say they’re for change.  that’s BS. They all say the same stuff.  Therefore, there’s no difference….”)

Right, blurring, but completely unsuccessfully (0.00 / 0)
As you said, it’s just not credible.

John McCain, just like that.

Cant these loser consultants come up with their own marketing (0.00 / 0)
First we had to endure Hillary’s lame “Yes We Will” now this. Talk about Change you can Xerox, they all have it.

Maybe like Hillary McCain will also proclaim he’s “found himself” sometime in the middle of this campaign. Wait till he discovers he’s still in a fox hole in a war that every stopped fighting more than 30 years ago.

Candidates should have to go on The Apprentice before they’re even allowed in the primary field.

My favorite was Mitt Romney (4.00 / 2)
Who once led a crowd in a chant of “They Haven’t.”

That’s heavy, man.

Walt (4.00 / 2)
It’s a sure-to-remain-unfulfilled dream of mine to see a politician use that Whitman line when Russert does one of his stupid, gotcha quote-questions.

“In 1992, you once said [x], and yet now you call for [not x].”

“Do I contradict myself, Tim? Very well, then I contradict myself; I am large, I contain multitudes.”

I’d immediately max out donating to whoever said that.

Side effects include – side splitting laughter.

What a gem. And if the republicans keep on this way, and all th wit and acuity of the blogosphere beams on them rather than internecine wars, they won’t stand a chance.

Has anyone notified the drug company .. (0.00 / 0)

John McCain: Bush right to veto kids health insurance expansion

We could help them out. (4.00 / 2)
I suggest ‘The Audacity of Change.’

McCain is against children’s health insurance.

man, did their consultants just throw in the towel from the git go?

or did all their good consultants go into industry and leave the goopers with their crappiest consultants?

Not Exactly (4.00 / 1)
man, did their consultants just throw in the towel from the git go?

They had to be waterboarded, first.

(A tortured slogan from tortured consultants!  It all makes perfect sense.)

Let's stay away from the mental health jokes though. (4.00 / 2)
And those ‘brain zaps’ are real. And they suck. They occur because of withdrawl from the drug and all of the depression/anxiety drugs.

John McCain defends Bush’s Iraq strategy.

I urge you to help clarify the areas that can be used. (0.00 / 0)
Because its very good to say “Republicans make you crazy, but don’t throw them out, take an anti-depressant. Change You Deserve(TM)

Can youtube handle the traffic? (0.00 / 0)
Please, gods, let them go big with this slogan. The opportunities for videos boggle the mind. Most of them will probably feature whips, knives, and guns.

It’s also worth asking if they came up with this to make a contrast with all the change we didn’t deserve, but got from them anyway over the past 8 miserable years?

This makes me so happy, thanks Chris Ha ha aha aha aha aha, (0.00 / 0)
Just because they’re stupid doesn’t mean they aren’t evil, they wont fool me into being lax by such stumbles. We have to pound the present leadership of that party into the ground, until not a single republican hypocrite Bush Enabler of the last 2 decades is in office.

Obama 2008 Hope and Change

John Judis’ article on Obama as the American Adam reminded me of a book I read a while back in grad-school called “The American Adam” by R.W.B. Lewis – since then I think about Adamic language constantly

how about (4.00 / 1)
Change You Deserve, brought to you by Big Pharma, Big Oil, the wealthiest people in the world, and the letter C.

I know it’s a bit unweildy, but then so is trying to convince people that an old man indicted in multiple scandals and caught both hugging Bush and not voting for him substantively believes in change.

Why don’t they go back to the old slogan?  Family values for straight, White, rich, male, selfish members of the financial elites.

Insert clever quote

It's honest (0.00 / 0)
Republicans want to give you the change they think you deserve. By which I mean that they want to screw you into the ground for the benefit of their millionaire friends slightly more than they do already.

Someone has to make a parody ad (0.00 / 0)
Making fun of the slogan and the GOP in the style of those horrible prescription drug commercials. Come on YouTubers!

Politics is a strong and slow boring of hard boards.
