Democrats in Minnesota, Please Quit Stabbing Al Franken in the Back

by: Matt Stoller

There’s a nasty fake scandal in Minnesota about Al Franken’s candidacy for Senate.  Eight years ago, Franken wrote an article for Playboy, which is kind of funny and kind of obnoxious.  You can read excerpts here.  Franken was, for many years, an artist, who helped create the groundbreaking show Saturday Night Live.  He has done huge amounts of work fundraising and supporting Democrats for more than ten years, and USO tours to support and entertain soldiers on tours in the Middle East.  The jokes he told aren’t always family-friendly, but then, I’m assuming that we’re all adult enough to recognize that life isn’t always family-friendly.  Writing Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them was important; when few Democrats stood up against the right and when few journalist would call Bush and the punditocracy a group of liars, Franken did.  And he’s continued that track record in his campaign, smacking Norm Coleman around and refusing to condemn Moveon when they ran the Petraeus ads, unlike Amy Klobuchar, the junior Senator from Minnesota, who proudly voted to condemn 3 million Democratic activists.
Matt Stoller :: Democrats in Minnesota, Please Quit Stabbing Al Franken in the Back
Franken’s campaign is drawing a strong youth contingent, a widespread small dollar donor base, and looks a lot like what Obama is doing.  This of course scares the Democratic political elite in the state, who are used to caution and anodyne risk-free messaging.  So now, they are trying to rip Franken’s throat out, first with a fake tax scandal where he paid taxes to New York State instead of 17 other states (which he is correcting), and now with this.  It looks to me like it’s coming from former Franken primary opponent Mike Ciresi’s people, and from Bush Dogs like Tim Walz.  Walz in particular is pushing this story aggressively within the delegation.  Progressive Keith Ellison is also unhappy with Franken, but remember, he signed a letter backing Fox News in its failed to host a Democratic Presidential debate.  Despite our work, there really is little support in the Democratic Party for people willing to take chances to communicate creatively and effectively.

Democrat Rep. Betty McCollum is leading the charge against Franken.

“As a woman, a mother, a former teacher, and an elected official, I find this material completely unacceptable,” McCollum said of Franken’s piece, published in 2000 under the headline “Porn-O-Rama!”

This cycle, McCollum has received $4600 in campaign contributions from Mike Ciresi and his wife, and even more than that from Ciresi’s law firm.  Ciresi dropped out of the primary after it became clear that he would not only lose to Franken, but would come in third, behind insurgent Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer.  Next week is the DFL convention where delegates will choose the nominee for Senate, and Franken is going to win it.  He out-organized and outworked Ciresi.  However, in Minnesota, there is also a primary later this year, but the primary is often a formality, as most candidates defer to the DFL convention results.

The smear campaign, spearheaded by Democratic establishment types who had been funded by Ciresi for years, is an attempt to create the space for Ciresi to get back into the race.  Ciresi unsuccessfully ran for Senate in 2000, losing in the primary to Mark Dayton, and he believes that had he “taken his pal John Edwards’ early advice and hired Bob Shrum”, he might have won the primary.  That’s the person going after Franken right now.

Transformative progressive candidates are people who speak and communicate well.  Franken’s training as an artist and a storyteller meant that he took risks, creative risks, and learned how to connect with large groups of people and entertain them.  He’s very very good at it.  And that’s the kind of person we need in the Senate, a smart, dedicated, aggressive Democrat that understands the modern media environment.

Democrats in Minnesota would do well to stop stabbing him in the back.  Just say, eight years ago Al Franken was a professional comedian, and voters can tell the difference between jokes and Norm Coleman’s record of voting with Bush to send thousands of Americans and sink trillions of dollars into an immoral war that should never have been waged.

… Senate Guru points us to this site, just launched, the Coleman Files, on Norm Coleman.

UPDATE:  It turns out Franken is in a statistical tie with Coleman.  Steve Perry at Minnesota Monitor has more on the dynamics of the race.

I hope the attack on Franken falls as flat as the attack on Jim Webb over some sex scenes in one of his novels awhile back.  It’s up to Minnesotians to prove they have a sense of humor and understand that writers write sometimes tasteless stuff.  Soon, I’m sure they will attack Franken to for having attended a Grateful Dead concert. The voters are probably more concerned with war, gas prices and health care.

Well said.

When one flips through The Coleman Files, one sees what a terrible record Smilin’ Norm has.  Since he can’t debate the issues, he has to rely on distractions.  It’s very disappointing to see a high-profile Democrat buying into (and offering any sense of validity to) such distractions.

I listened regularly (0.00 / 0)
and I’m not still not sure what you are talking about.  If you have a problem with Al, just spit it out.  All I heard on his show was a tremendous amount of even-handed, level-headed, thoughtful analysis – with a lot of guests of all kinds.

Well Peter maybe you didn't have my nuanced ear ,,, (0.00 / 0)
It was painful sometimes listening to the nervousness and fake laugh of Christy Harvey (sp?) as he drooled down the mic… he, I presume, thinking it was funny, amusing, while I wanted to gag…

His guests were ok… although he was a useless interviewer, kept butting in with the conservative alterative argument – [often while Sirota was on] just plain weird at times.  Plus, his ‘slurred’ disinterested planned parenthood advert was also weird.  He definitely had a aura/character? that came across as the ‘dirty old man’ — just didn’t find it funny.

Nope — the guy was plain creepy at times.  But hey that’s JMO…  and a few other women bloggers that had the same take at the time.

Hmmm (0.00 / 0)
You are correct, I do not have a “nuanced” ear for listening for possible philandering – mostly because I could care less, even if it were true.  Lots of things on his show were a little “off” to me, mostly because he was usually trying to be humorous and it didn’t always work.

The one place I can see your point of view was when he would sing to Christy Harvey.  I wondered how Franni felt about it but since he continued to do it every week for months, I just chalked it up to Christy having a special place in Al’s heart.

Mostly what I heard was Al wearing his heart on his sleeve and freely sharing it with the listening audience.  I heard him tear up several times when talking about things that were important to him.  I think we could use that kind of passion and sincerity in Washington.  I can’t wait until he is in the Senate.

Actually I enjoyed Al Franken's show… (4.00 / 1)
used to listen to it in the morning while driving to drop off my son at preschool and pick up my daughter at one school before driving her to her other one.

Some of his humor was lame, but some was funny, and I never got the dirty old man vibe you speak of.  Instead, I enjoyed the interesting and articulate guests he had and his openly progressive take on the news.

While I was surprised when he quit his show to run for the Senate, I think he’d make a good Senator, and I’m hoping he’ll defeat Norm Coleman.

The Oppositon Researchers (4.00 / 3)
To the Democratic opposition researcher who dug up Frankin’s Playboy article:

OK, getting a job reading over everything Al Frankin has ever written is a pretty good gig.  I suppose you think the job is pretty cool, a lot better than your classmates who actually might have to sweat a little this summer.  It probably doesn’t pay great but if you have a sense of humor it must be pretty much fun.

But seriously, grow up.  Get a real job even if it is not in the wonderful world of politics.  Do something with your life.  Don’t be a weenie.  And you are a silly weenie.  Treat the voters like adults, they are over 18.  Hopefully someday you can say “I built that” or “I helped defeat John McCain” rather than “I found a dirty article written by Al Frankin”.

I agree that this kind of thing is not helpful and should have been left to the GOP attack dogs, but Al is letting Coleman and the media define him, and that’s not good.  I keep shooting him cash, but so far, I don’t see a very good return on my investment.  Besides, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer is still in the race, so we don’t need to talk about Mike Ciresi.

Also, (0.00 / 0)
I have always been a huge fan of Franken. In my opinion he is a hero and a patriot for standing up when everyone else seemed to be cowering before the rightwing machine. But nevertheless, I still wonder if Al’s history of off-color humor is just too much of a liability in this state?

Also, keep in mind Tim Waltz won the 1st District that had been in GOP hands for 12 years. He is better that Gil Gutknecht. Still, there is a lot of dead wood in the MN Democratic Party. Unfortunately we haven’t generated the quality of Progressive candidates that we should.

has a sense of humor, even if its a bit dark, or off-color. If these jokes were Franken’s only worry in this campaign, this story would, itself, be a joke.  As it is, its a distraction from his his real task, which should be countering the way Coleman and the media are defining him (which I won’t repeat here, so as not to continue the frame).

disagree (4.00 / 1)
Matt, I think you are completely off base here.

First of all, cut out the ad hominem attacks on members of the Minnesota congressional delegation.  So you think Walz (my congressman) is a Bush Dog?  Fine, but that has no bearing on whether he is right about Franken.  Oh no, Keith Ellison supported the FOX debate, so therefore his opinion means nothing.  The criticism of McCollum is valid from a question of where her interests lie.  The issue is if Franken as a candidate can stand the test he’ll face in this election.

Secondly, delegates like me are not beholden to what the national scene wants.  I’ll be voting for Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer at the state convention, even though he’s likely to lose.  I think Coleman is very beatable, but I think many of our best candidates were driven out or never considered running once Franken was in.  He had the celebrity, the money, and the hype surrounding him to crowd out most other potential candidates.

If Franken gets the endorsement, I’ll work for him gladly.  But I also realize that he is a flawed candidate that may be able to win.  I’m not going to carry water for all Democrats just to win elections.

Walz (0.00 / 0)
If Walz really is pushing this that is sad, considering all the work Franken did to get him elected.  What makes you think that Walz is behind it, though?

Because when asked about it (4.00 / 1)
he called the piece of writing, “pretty inappropriate”

Walz isn’t pushing anything.  He made a pretty realistic assessment of the piece of writing when asked about it and was then quoted by the Star Trib.

Stoller just wants to keep this ridiculous labeling of Walz as a “Bush Dog” going even though he’s the most progressive representative that his district has seen since 1933.

Dude, good call. (0.00 / 0)
As much as Franken has very selflessly helped the establishment (he campaigned with almost all of the Democratic candidates in 2004, and with a ton of house and Senate candidates), this is still an outsider vs. insurgent battle.

More attention should be being paid to this instead of the tired concern trolling of: “comedians aren’t serious candidates, he’s just a celebrity, etc, etc.”

It's a serious issue (0.00 / 0)
and turning off a significant number of women. Franken’s refusal to deal with the issue and to meet with key women leaders in the state about it will make it that much harder to reconcile with the Hillary supporters, as well as with some of the key feminist leaders in the state for both the national race and the U.S. Senate race.

Plus, its part of a steady drum beat of negative info that keeps coming out day after day that paints a very dim picture of Franken’s character to voters who don’t know him that well.

Shooting down Rep. McCollum (who supports Obama btw) helps no one.  You talked about a strong female archetype that’s needed in politics the other day?  Keep slamming Betty (not just Matt but some of Franken’s key MN supporters as well) and you’ll all see what a strong female leader can do real quick.

I don't get it (4.00 / 1)
What does writing about sex have to do with feminism, and why  would it represent poor character? Are feminists against sex now?

[ Parent ]
So I see you want to be exhibit 1 (0.00 / 0)
for why __ (fill in the blank here) doesn’t get it.

Big sigh. It has nothing to do with “sex”.  It has everything to do with objectification of women.  It has everything to do with references to beastality and his 11 year old son downloading images off of the internet.

It’s a poorly written male Jr. High School fantasy that totally objectifies women with offshoots into stuff that is extremely questionable.  That’s the issue.

[ Parent ]
OK I'll be your exhibit (0.00 / 0)
I don’t understand the concept of objectification, and I doubt I ever will. It seems like you’re saying that people can only fill one roll. If I look at you as a potential sex partner, then I’m incapable of also looking at you as a person. That doesn’t make sense to me.

Do I see women as sex objects? Yes, absolutely. Just like I may see my colorful umbrella as a work of art. That doesn’t mean I appreciate it any less for its ability to keep rain off my head.

There's a difference between sex and pornography (0.00 / 0)

Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer (4.00 / 1)
is still running against Franken for the nomination.  He’s far more progressive, and deserves support.

Well point taken (0.00 / 1)
But everyone I’ve talked to tells me that Franken is pretty much a d-bag. Thats not to say he isn’t a progressive and someone we should support but it’s hard to get really invested in the campaign when the candidate is a jackass.

Not my experience (4.00 / 1)
FWIW (probably not a lot) I ran into Franken in the Boston airport a month or two ago.  I was convinced it wasn’t him, in part because he was sitting by himself waiting for the same flight as us, quietly reading a book.  Surely someone in the middle of a campaign for the Senate would be on the phone, busy working on something, would have staff around, etc.  He wouldn’t be quietly waiting for a flight.

Well, one of my friends went up to talk to him, and he was extremely happy to chat, talk about his campaign, his books, his vague recollection of a mutual acquaintance.  When we boarded the flight, he took his seat in coach (in the middle no less) and started chatting with the person next to him.

I also know some folks who ran into him at other times and had precisely the same experience.

I know that’s not saying a whole lot, but at least from limited encounters with random nobodies, he was warm, genuine, and friendly.  Which is more than I can say about a lot of folks.

Stop patronizing Minnesota (0.00 / 0)
We do good work at Open Left, but a few points need to be considered.

1.  The objective is to flip the Minnesota senate seat from R to D, not to elect Al Franken.  Franken would probably do OK as senator and I’ll vote for him if he is the nominee, but it’s not about Al.

2.  A little respect is due solid progressives like McCollum and Ellison whose only crime is understanding the local political climate, and saying things some people don’t want to hear.  Minnesota is not New York or California and a Franken is viewed as little more than a vulgar clown by a lot of people who normally would be receptive to voting for a Democrat.  The Playboy article only reinforces that narrative.  It makes our job, trying to get him elected, that much harder.

3.  That Franken has the highest name recognition nationally doesn’t make him the best candidate for Minnesota.  That Franken is a credible candidate doesn’t make him the best candidate for Minnesota.  He stands a good chance at being the nominee, but he is no more entitled to a coronation than Hillary was.

It’s about not doing the GOP’s job for them.

Half done (4.00 / 1)
Some would say that nominating Franken will be doing half the work for the GOP.  I believe that any number of people would have made far better candidates than Franken, but he sucked all the air out of the room when he entered the race.  So now we have two choices: Al Franken or Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer.  I’m astounded by how flippant the blogosphere is towards Jack, as he should be our ideal candidate.  Everyone is just too in love with the idea of Franken to really see the bigger picture.

What kind of money … (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
I'm not sure how relevant this is (0.00 / 0)
this particular cycle.  Honestly, the Republicans in Minnesota are in so much trouble, more trouble than national Republicans if you can believe it, that I don’t think Pallmeyer’s lack of fundraising clout could hurt him that much.  Obama’s going to crush in this state, and Pallmeyer might run behind him but he would likely win as long as he had enough money to run a competent campaign.

I don’t think we need Franken levels of money to win this race, in this state, in this particular year.  But at any other time that would be a much bigger factor.

[ Parent ]
Paul, no one is doing the GOP's job for them (0.00 / 0)
Ellison was quoted as saying how would he explain something like this to his daughter.  I feel the same way. It’s actually better that this stuff comes out now so we can deal with it.

Frankly, I find the whole article to be misogynistic and childish and not something I find particularly appealing in a potential U.S. Senator.  Are we going back to the days of Bob Packwood?  No wonder a lot of women are pissed off.

And Franken is refusing to deal with it.  He’s refusing to meet with key women party leaders “anytime, anywhere” to discuss the issue and clear the air.

[ Parent ]
well (4.00 / 2)
Minnesota is not New York or California and a Franken is viewed as little more than a vulgar clown by a lot of people who normally would be receptive to voting for a Democrat.

It wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that top Democrats re-enforce this image, would it?

Nice triangulation off California and New York, though.

[ Parent ]
Minnesota really is different (0.00 / 0)
It really is a different place and I say this as newcomer to the state.  The urban core – in particular Minneapolis – is one of the most progressive areas in the country. It’s a hotbed of creative class activity and a major arts center in and of its own right.

Most (not all) of the suburbs are a completely different place. They have more in common with places like Dallas and Kansas City and Denver than they do with the urban core which has a lot more in common with Chicago, Boston, SF and NY.  And many of these suburban residents are originally farm and small-town kids from rural Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and the Dakotas.

Rural Minnesota is a place unto itself. Strong communitarian impluses crossed with strong social conservatism and a dash of libertarianism. And a very elderly population.

There have always been concerns with how Franken’s persona and style would play here.  And this article finally crossed the line for too many people from all walks of lives in the state and all levels of participation in the party.

[ Parent ]
How is that relevant to whether other Democrats are attacking (0.00 / 0)
a Democrat? Does that difference include backstabbing?

[ Parent ]
Franken probably isn't a good fit for Minnesota (0.00 / 0)
That’s why it is relevant.  And they are not attacking.  They are raising concerns, concerns that have been raised previously that Franken and his campaign have chosen to repeatedly ignore.

Shoot it’s gotten so bad, Schumer had to step in and get Team Franken a professional campaign manager a few weeks ago.

That said, he’s strong on some of our key issues. But so is Pallmeyer and so was Ciresi.

[ Parent ]
I think the voters should decide that (0.00 / 0)
based on what the candidates are advocating rather than attempts to use speicous irrelevant arguments to attack Franken. I am weird that way. And,a ctually I’ve seen the poll numbers. Franken comes in a 46 percent against Coleman’s 47 percent. Next argument.

[ Parent ]
Headline: One plane didn't crash (0.00 / 0)
Nobody notices the good news.  Lost in all this Franken faux scandal is the fact that Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer has stayed completely away from it.  So have his supporters.  Though reporters have tried repeatedly to goad Jack into a critical statement, he has refused to make one.  Jack’s volunteers are strictly cautioned to avoid all criticism of Franken when campaigning.

That said, we have always believed that Jack was the best candidate.  We believe that Jack is closer to the Democratic Party (DFL) base and that his style resonates better with the average Minnesota voter.

If elected, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer would be the best gift Minnesota has sent to Washington since we sent Wellstone there last, back in 1996.
