Help Research Republicans and Telecom PACs

Ok, so I just broke the news that every Senate Democratic challenger has come out for net neutrality, and that there is basically no telecom and cable money going to Democrats.  What about the other side?

I need your help to figure that out.  Here’s a chart, with all Democratic candidates and their Republican opponents.  How much money from telecom and cable companies is going to the Republicans?  I used OpenSecrets to find out the amount Susan Collins and Ted Stevens are getting.  Can we fill out the rest of this chart?

Candidate State Contributions from
Telecom/Cable
Position Opponent Contributions from
Telecom/Cable
Allen ME $0 Favors Collins $46,450
Begich AK $0 Favors Stevens $223,600
Franken MN $62,650 Favors Coleman
Hagen NC $0 Favors Dole
Kleeb NE $0 Favors Johanns
LaRocco ID $4,600 Favors Risch
Lunsford KY $0 Favors McConnell
Merkley OR $0 Favors Smith
Musgrove MS (B) $0 Favors Wicker
Noriega TX $0 Favors Cornyn
Rice OK $0 Favors Inhofe
Shaheen NH $0 Favors Sununu
Slattery KS $2,800 Favors Roberts
Udall CO $54,450 Favors Schaffer
Udall NM $0 Favors Pearce
Warner VA $45,050 Favors Gilmore

Put numbers for the rest of the candidates in the comments.  Hopefully we’ll find a few who don’t get huge sums of money from the telecom and cable interests, and we can lobby them for net neutrality.

and that there is basically no telecom and cable money going to Democrats

Any comments on this?

maybe I missed it in previous posts (0.00 / 0)
How do you define telecom/cable?  Is there a list of specific companies you want us to check for?

New Jersey politics at Blue Jersey.

Cornyn (0.00 / 0)
As much as I can tell he does not get a lot.

Yeah, good luck getting him onboard (0.00 / 0)
The reason Cornyn doesn’t get much telco money is because they don’t need to lobby him. He naturally votes for the most evil option every time.

McConnell (0.00 / 0)
He only received 13,000 from utility pacs (as opposed to hundreds of thousands) both this race and 2006.

Norm Coleman (0.00 / 0)
Over his career, from Communications/Electronics sector, the amount is $640,071. Open Secrets breaks it down to ~$206k from PACs and $434k from individuals.

Elizabeth Dole (0.00 / 0)
Oddly, her $541,933 total for Communications/Electronics sector is second smallest of all her donor categories. Defense is lower, but Finance/Insurance/Real Estate leads with over $3 million. In addition, she has another 4 sectors that add up to $1 million or more.

Roger Wicker (0.00 / 0)
With a shorter career, his total for Communications/Electronics is $243,680. His levels range from a low of $35k from Labor to a high of $758 in the Finance/Insurance/Real Estate categories.

John Sununu (0.00 / 0)
From ’03-’08:

Telecom Svs.: $73,750
Computers/Internet: $113,222

He’d be a big one to lobby as he’s on Commerce and cares most about that committee and its issues.

Jim Inhofe (0.00 / 0)
Telecom and Computers don’t show up in his top industries (not surprisingly it’s all energy, paying for his climate change obfuscation).

Lobbyists contributed $128,683.

Steve Pearce (0.00 / 0)
Nothing from the two major industries for his Senate race. They also did not appear in his top industries list for his ’06, ’04 and ’02 House races.

Open Secrets search strategy to use? (0.00 / 0)
Stevens is the first record I’ve looked at that breaks out the telecoms by themselves as Telecom Services and Equipment. In other words, the tables of Industry/Sectors are tailored to each individual, and none of the members I looked at (above) used the Telecom Services and Equipment category.

How do you want us to proceed? Thanks!

Campaign for Telecoms to take Net Neutrality Pledge (0.00 / 0)
I am part of a new campaign to switch to the first Telecom to take the Net Neutrality Pledge. It is a new type of campaign because people can join the campaign without switching but once the first Telecom takes the Pledge (as long as they provide service in your area) then all the members will switch. If you’re interested check it out here: http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/first-telecom-to-take-the-net-neutrality-pledge-wins-our-business

Thanks and let’s spread the word about keeping an open internet.
