It's what my Mom lived off.  My post-doc's salary sure as hell won't cut it.

but no investment trust should just be sitting in any one stock. Wachovia was wiped out much earlier than today. They were on the road to trouble in May, it had shed 50% of its value by then:

people - if you are counting on investments you have to live off of in the near term, you should probably seek professional advice and look to have your investments in very secure places. T-Bills and Gold look pretty good right about now. :)  

Cough - that last bit Im just kidding about. Im not advising you buy or not buy Gold or T-Bills.

The failure of the bailout today (4.00 / 1)

has nothing to do with Wachovia. It would not have saved your mother's trust even had it passed. And it's a bit disingenuous for proponents of the bailout to argue, without pause, or preface, that the bailout would have been a success. It might very well have made the situation worse. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Washington Mutual, AIG, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, IndyMac, Countrywide, Wachovia, their fates were sealed the day congress, with plenty of help from Democrats, deregulated finance. This is shock therapy in action. Conservatives, with the aid of too many Democrats, create a situation that quickly metastasizes into something cancerous, then use the exigency as an excuse to push something worse still. I'm still scratching my head over what would have happened had the bill passed, the 700 bil. been cleared, the system continued to tank, the funds exhausted, and nothing gained. What would this bill's proponents be saying the day after? There were alternatives...but.

I wish you folks would put a link prominently displayed on every page of this site to the Better Democrats page.

I was looking for one earlier today.  I eventually found the page, but it took 20 minutes, whereas, with a link available, it would have been nearly instantaneous.  Also, seriously consider adding Gary Trauner to the page.  He is running for Congress from Wyoming.  The Daily Kos poll showed him tied at 42% with the Repig candidate, who stated for publication that President Bush had "of course"  been doing a very good job.  That was about a month ago.  I think Trauner has a real chance to replace the retiring Cubin, one of the worst Representatives in recent history.  I had to leave the Better Democrats page after donating to three of them to find a page with Trauner on it.  It was hard on me, but it was worth it.  But how about helping to streamline my workflow!  Thanks, Matt.
