Specter's Greatest Hits

The more I think about the Pennsylvania State Democratic Committee meeting over the weekend, the angrier I get. Party leaders can try to paper over Arlen Specter's record all they want, but here are some key facts to keep in mind:

  1. Moved to the right in twelve consecutive Congresses: According to DW-nominate scores, Arlen Specter has become more right-wing in 13 consecutive Congresses, starting back during his first term in the early 1980's. Further, these same comprehensive scores place him significantly to the right of any other member of the Democratic Senate caucus. This includes Ben Nelson, who DW-nominate places 0.16 to the left of Specter on a -1.00 to +1.00 scale.

  2. Long-time proponent of flat tax legislation: Ten weeks ago, and three days before Arlen Specter voted against President Obama's budget, he introduced legislation to dramatically cut taxes on wealthy Americans and raise them on poor Americans

Senator Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) today introduced legislation that would scrap the 17,000 pages of current IRS code in favor of a 20 percent flat tax for all individuals and businesses. The revenue-neutral legislation would allow tax-payers to file returns on a postcard that could be completed in 15 minutes.

"My flat tax legislation would make filing a tax return a manageable chore, not a seemingly endless nightmare, for most taxpayers," Senator Specter said. "This legislation will fundamentally revise the present tax code, with its myriad rates, deductions, and instructions."

This legislation would have cut taxes for people making over $372,000 a year by 15%, those making between $172,000 and $373,000 by 13%, those making between $83,000 and $172,000 by 8%. It would have raised taxes on those making less than $34,000 a year by 5-10% (see current federal income taxes). It would have dramatically cut federal revenue, and led to massive social program cuts (which is, I presume, why Specter voted against President Obama's budget). Further, as I point out below, Specter has actually been campaigning on this same flat-tax proposal at least 1995.

  3. Ran for President as a hawkish, flat-taxing Republican: Remember when Arlen Specter ran for President in 1995? Here is what he said about Bill Clinton when he launched his campaign:

My commitment to America, is to replace a President who has been inattentive, inactive and indecisive when it comes to America's vital foreign policy interests.

I'm sure there are even more choice quotes than that, but the Internet wasn't very developed back then. Anyway, I can only guess that by not challenging George W. Bush in the same way, Specter approved of his foreign policy.

Also, Specter campaigned on his flat-tax proposal back in 1995, just in case you thought his latest legislation was designed to fend off Toomey. He has been pushing flat-taxes for 15 years.

  4. The ultimate fold: You simply cannot trust Arlen Specter. At all. Here is Specter on standing up for what's right:

Prior to the vote on the Military Commissions Act of 2006, he [Specter] went to the floor of the Senate and said what the bill "seeks to do is set back basic rights by some 900 years" and is "patently unconstitutional on its face."  He then proceeded to vote YES on the bill's passage.

Sounds like someone you can count on to do the right thing.

  5. Used Bush and Santorum in 2004 campaign ads: Here is a classic Specter campaign ad:

This was only five years ago. You simply can't trust Specter.

  6. Anita Hill: Remember Specter on Anita Hill?

Senator Arlen Specter, the Republican of Pennsylvania who had questioned Ms. Hill gently on Friday, told the hearing today that she was guilty of "flat-out perjury." He also told reporters outside the hearing room that he had "demolished her credibility" during the hearings on Friday.

Women make up 58% of the Pennsylvania primary electorate, by the way.

It is disturbing to think about all of this, and then to remember the state committee giving him multiple standing ovations. We must not become a party that defends the center-right status quo and accumulates power within that status quo for its own sake. By supporting Arlen Specter, I fear that is exactly what we are becoming.

Rick Santorum:

"Arlen Specter was the key vote not just in support the president's tax plan...but in getting the votes necessary to make that passage possible. Arlen is with us on the votes that matter."

Well, at least Sestak won't need a copywriter... (4.00 / 3)
...the ads are already made for him...

REID: Voting against us was never part of our arrangement!
SPECTER: I am altering the deal! Pray I don't alter it any further!
REID: This deal keeps getting worse all the time!

Check Glenn Greenwald's Archives (4.00 / 4)
You'll find a good cache of additional ammo there.  His Military Commissions shenanigans were just one aspect of a much more pervasive pattern of double-talk on all matters BushCo.

He is eminently beatable if we do a good job of getting all that stuff out.

Remember the search engine optimization (4.00 / 5)
that was run on McCain during the election?

Maybe it's time to start a Specter version. I need a new sig line anyway.

As I've said elsewhere; drain Specter for support of every Democratic initiative possible and then feed him into the chipper/shredder in 2010 as an example to other morally bankrupt motherfckers what happens if they continue to screw with the public.

will the White House play hardball (4.00 / 1)
with Sestak like they're doing to talk people out of challenging Gillibrand?

I believe in taking on Specter, but it's going to be very hard if the White House actively undermines Sestak.

one would think they would have already done so... (4.00 / 3)

Not just yet... (0.00 / 0)
They need to get some reliable votes out of Arlen first...

I think they are happy that Sestak is running, for now, at least...

If Sestak is running ... (4.00 / 1)
that means the unions are backing him .. which means the WH can only do so much .. and besides .. they don't get to vote in the election

Does the White House want that fight? (0.00 / 0)
Obama wants us whipping votes on healthcare, not on a timetable for Afghanistan or releasing detainee photos.

60 votes is a number, and not really a meaningful one, as if it's close Bayh and Nelson have already started running away from the party. Whereas the progressive movement is a vital part of Obama's echo chamber and ground game.

He'll ignore us and go against us when he gets something from the centre-right that makes it worthwhile. But I'm not sure that Specter's proved he's worthwhile yet.

Many of you may have heard about the 2010 Pennsylvania Senate race and Arlen Specter's decision to abandon the Republican Party and switch to the Democratic Party because he believed that he would have lost in next year's Republican Primary, ending his political career.

We are at such a critical point in Pennsylvania's history, and our nation's, that who you are running against pales in comparison to what are you running for. So while Arlen's decision may be good for himself, politically, to avoid running against someone he could not beat, his decision begs what he is running for, and whether he is the best candidate to shape the future of Pennsylvania.

After 31 years of serving in our country's military, and leading our brave men and women in harm's way, one of my core tenets is that you run for something you believe in, and do not avoid that which may be difficult.

I love my job in the 7th District, but we must assess whether Arlen is the best to shape the future that we need in the 7th District and Pennsylvania.
