I'm making an Open Bet with Open Left. This process ends with 3 if the House is gullible enough (Or the Charlie Brown US House we should call them...) or stupid enough or corrupt enough to ever trust the president and/or the senate.

Open Left's Chris Bowers tells us how passing health care reform might work in the weeks to come. Its kind of funny.

Counting votes on health reform in the House (+)

The procedural path is now set on health reform:

1. The Senate convinces the House they have the votes to pass a reconciliation "fix" to the Senate health bill
2. The House then passes the Senate health bill
3. President Obama then signs the Senate health bill into law
4. The House then passes a reconciliation bill to fix the Senate health bill
5. The Senate then passes that reconciliation bill
6. President Obama signs reconciliation bill into law in about a month.

Over the past two weeks here at Open Left, we have spent most of our time focusing on step #1, counting votes in the Senate. However, with reconciliation now seeming like a sure thing in the Senate, it is time to start looking at step #2, passing the Senate health bill in the House. Here is the math:

I'm making an Open Bet with Open Left. This process ends with 3 if the House is gullible enough (Or the Charlie Brown US House we should call them...) or stupid enough or corrupt enough to ever trust the president and/or the senate. Keep in mind that there are over 200 bills that the House has already sent to the US Senate so that we could watch them die. And some of these bills, like the healthcare bill and like Cap N Trade, were already compromised before they reached the US Senate.

The gawdawful senate bill is the bill that the White House wants. Its the bill that the lobbyists want. They even said that's what they wanted. If I recall the quote it was "We won everything." And they're right. With the senate bill, they pretty much won everything.

I'll bet ten bucks that this process ends with "3", Chris. Unless yer yella'....

Obviously, There's A Real Risk Of This (0.00 / 0)
But Nancy Pelosi didn't become the first female Speaker of the House by taking things for granted, and not doing her homework.  The environment has been extremely adverse, but I think it's pretty clear that she's got more on the ball than any legislative leader probably since Tip O'Neill.

That doesn't mean you wouldn't win your bet.  But if anyone could make this work from the House side, I would pick Pelosi to pull it off.  And this is not to say that I always agree her.  It's about competence in adverse circumstances.

You mean the supposed "Feminist Icon" who... (0.00 / 0)
gave us an anti choice healthcare bill? A bill that could set back choice 40 years? Really, you have the faith?

Look, a good negotiator, with any sense and who's watched the Senate poison and kill everything decent for the last year or so, would tell the senate to move first or pass the House bill through reconciliation. Period.

I do have faith in Pelosi to rubberstamp a very bad Senate bill. I also have faith that the senate won't pass the changes or they'll pass very slight changes.

The Democratic Party is corrupt. They're not wimps. They're not stupid. This is calculated corruption. We need a Third Party.

You and Chris remind me of wives who keep on returning to their abusive husbands, all beaten up, bloodied and bruised. "Oh, I'm not pressing charges against Barry...he's gonna treat me good the NEXT time. So sooo good. He's just in a hard fix don't you know and he gets to drinking...its my fault doncha know. I ask for too much. I vex him with my watered down house proposals...I-I had it coming. Had it coming. He'll do real good next time, with Cap and Trade. you'll see. He's a good man. And of course, I'm taking Paul's advice, where I never even threaten to support and fund viable third party runs. Gives me a tactical advantage to know that I will never ever leave Barry and his friend Rahm, who also beats me..."

Everyone knows that Stupak's language isn't going to be in the final bill.

If you're going to play the "tough-minded realist", you need to stay in character.
