A Citizens United World: Chamber of Commerce and Target spread their money around

Big business, bolstered by the terrible Citizens United decision allowing them to spread corporate money to buy elections, is throwing money around like there is no tomorrow. Here are a couple of the most egregious examples:

1. Target has become the poster child for bad corporate behavior in the CU-style corporate spending in elections realm, giving over $150,000 to an effort to help elect far right wing Tom Emmer in the Minnesota Governor's race. Emmer wants to abolish the minimum wage, gave money to a group that condoned the death penalty for being gay, and loves Arizona's immigration law. MoveOn.org, LGBT groups, and other progressives have pushed back, launching a campaign to target Target for this behavior. We need to show corporate America that if they want to spend their corporate money backing right wing candidates, it will hurt their brand and their bottom line.

Check out the MoveOn campaign, add your name, and get involved here.

2. The Chamber of Commerce is sliming Alexi Giannoulias with a nasty personal attack ad. Giannoulias has been making his campaign about taking on big corporate interests - his reform platform echoes MoveOn's Clean UP Washington Corporate Corruption campaign. He has been making these very strong reform proposals the centerpiece of his campaign so far, and because he takes on special interest corporate control of DC, the Chamber has decided to make an example of him.

The political problem is that Alexi doesn't have much money, and the Chamber has a ton, mostly raised from the very biggest corporations. This is a crucial time for the progressive community to get behind Alexi and make a major push for him. Sending him some money is a good way to push back at a Chamber of Commerce that is working hard to keep DC safe for corporate lobbyists.

Help Alexi here.

Constitutional Amendment (0.00 / 0)
It's great to threaten to boycott Target for pouring money into politics, but that's only going to work in a very small number of cases.

If you want to fix Citizens United, you need a Constitutional Amendment.  It's the only way to undo the damage.

that citizens united will only help republicans?  are you stating that no corporations will ever back/support a democratic candidate.  or, are you simply only targeting (no pun intended) those corporations that spend money on republican candidates.  my understanding was that citizens united worked both ways.  everyone was now free to donate what they wanted....ie., the unions are now able to freely donate as much as they want for their candidates.  I know for a fact that unions have in the past made huge donations to candidates.  how has this changed anyhting?

hugh donations? (0.00 / 0)
Unions are by law, non profit. Their only money comes from members dues, which are keept to a level that funds the operation of the union and little else. Political donations made in support of union goals have (until now?) been volunteerly given by individual members expressly for political action. These funds, and records, at least prior to "citizens united", were meticulously kept seperate by law. And throughly inspected (down to the penny during republican administrations) by the dept. of labor almost annually. Unions themselfs have little (on no) money to spend on political action.

Corporations, on the other hand, have billions of cash PROFIT to spend on anti people legislation, money they got from the people. Years ago the spread was 8 to 1 that corporations spent on political campaigns over what unions spent. Under "citizens united" this discrepancy will likely explode.

the $300 million plus that the unions spent in the 2008 elections and the $50 million plus that Trumka has said he is going to spend during mid-terms this year is just union member chump change and doesn't compete with corporate donations.......are you buying or selling this crap?

If you really believe this is anywhere near equal.....?! (0.00 / 0)
I think the dems would happily trade all union contributions for half of the repubs corporate contributions.... Do you think they would get any takers?

I don't believe any large corporations (the ones that have outsized influence in U.S. politics) will ever support a PROGRESSIVE democrat. A corporate dem, sure....they vote with the corrupt rober barrons so why not?

Perhaps we could start a campaign to vote for ANYONE, except the candidate with the most TeeVee adds?
