Eric Massa to resign on Monday

This just in:

Rep. Eric Massa (D-NY) will resign Monday at 5pm, a source close to the embattled incumbent tells Hotline OnCall.

Massa has been pressured by House Dems to step aside amid an ethics controversy that caused him to announce earlier this week he would not run for a second term.

If true, then it would set up a summer special election in the NY-29, which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of Republican +5.5.  It would be a difficult seat to keep.

Just as importantly, in the short term it would mean only 216 votes are required to pass health reform in the House.  Since Massa was a no vote, this actually helps the chances of reform.  Now, only 216 will be needed for passage, instead of 217 if Massa was still in the House.

Update: Greg Sargent confirms that Massa will resign.

really?

Yep (0.00 / 0)
It takes a vote our of the "no" column, and reduces the total number of votes needed for passage from 217 to 216.

I know how to do math (0.00 / 0)
I thought him being a D and especially with him retiring after this session, that he could be persuaded to change his vote

Personally, I refuse to condemn someone for allegations .... but, that's just me.

Oh god, why does he need to resign? (0.00 / 0)
He's not running for reelection.  Why does he have to resign?  Now New York has to pay for a special election, one that could be harder to win than one in November.

Why would House Dems want him to resign?  I really don't understand.  What's the harm to them of him staying in office?

Possibly (0.00 / 0)
He resigned because he really, really wanted to avoid being investigated by the ethics committee.  Maybe he did something very wrong.

That's what I would think if the same circumstances surrounded a Republican retirement and so I think it is reasonable to have the same suspicions about Massa.
