NH-Sen: Dems on Verge Of Blowing Easy Pickup

I wonder if Steve Marchand and Katrina Swett still think it was a good idea to drop out in New Hampshire. A new ARG poll shows a dramatic turnaround in what had long been considered one of the top four pickup opportunities for Democrats:

A new poll to be released today shows Republican Sen. John Sununu has taken over the lead in next year's possible U.S. Senate race against Democratic former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen.

The American Research Group polled 558 likely voters Dec. 16-19 and found Sununu with 52 percent, Shaheen with 41 percent and 7 percent undecided. Earlier ARG polls showed Shaheen leading Sununu, most recently by 46 to 41 percent in September.

Oy. What could be causing such a dramatic turnaround in New Hampshire, where all previous polls had shown Shaheen comfortably ahead? TPM Election central spells is out:

Sununu's upsurge could be happening for any number of reasons - or this poll could just be an outlier - but there is one particular possibility: That the recent attacks from Jeanne's husband Billy, against Barack Obama's teenage drug use, might have taken a toll on her Senate campaign.

Sometimes candidates (or, in this case, spouses of candidates) will do really stupid things, and the campaign will change dramatically. This reminds me of the 2005 New York City mayor's race, in which Ferrer started out with comfortable leads. The turning point in the campaign was when, in March of 2005, Ferrer made a colossal error involving comments over Amadou Diallo. He pissed off what should have been his general election base, and came across as a flip-flopping panderer. In one fell swoop, polls moved 20 points in favor of Bloomberg overnight and a seemingly certain victory turned into a crushing defeat.

I wonder if that is what we are seeing in New Hampshire now, too. Billy's Shaheen's attacks against Obama could be doing serious damage to his wife's standing among New Hampshire Independents, among whom Obama leads. Even apart from hurting Shaheen in a key voting block, this is the sort of incident that could make her look like another crass politician by engaging in vicious, racially-tinted character attacks through a surrogate. That won't help her among anyone.

Unfortunately for Democrats, two of her three opponents in the Democratic primary, including her two best funded and most experienced opponents, have dropped out. Jay Buckey is the only candidate Shaheen still faces. Now. Buckey's chances aren't probably any better than Shaheen's, but unless this poll is an outlier, they probably aren't any worse than Shaheen's either.

Update: I should emphasize that the possibility of this poll being an outlier is pretty high. The Governor numbers look screwy, too, for example. We'll have to see what's up when the next polls come out...

It is ARG who have a history of reporting wild fluctuations (4.00 / 1)
I would like to see some confirmation from other sources before I get really worried. Still, if true he is still just over 50% with the race having hardly begun. And I suspect any lingering Dem and indie upset over the comments will pass and they will return to the fold just as Repubs seem to have come back to Sununu.

Yeah, Shaheen's been consistently lower in ARG polls. (0.00 / 0)
That said, her husband didn't do her any favors. But I'd still be surprised if this, of all things, was a race-changing moment.

Previous ARG Results were (4.00 / 1)
frequently different from more reputable polls such as the UNH/WMUR polls.  Here are previous ARG results so you can compare within one methodology.

June of 07, Shaheen +28
September of 07, Shaheen +5

I'm working for Jay Buckey, so you'll forgive me if I plug him for a moment:  He has a very appealing background and scientific style, and has been developing his speaking ability to a point where he's been changing the expectations of democratic activists all over the state.  I can promise you that we'll be able to hold Sununu accountable for his votes on the Iraq War and Bush Tax cuts, both of which Jay is on the record against.

In the larger perspective, the big questions remain:  how far an outlier can this poll be?  I'm fairly certain that other outlets will show different results, but by how far?
And is this representative of a shift of party affinity, or simply the candidates themselves?

Hopefully we'll some polls showing in more detail what's happening as a result of this one.

Fence-Mending (0.00 / 0)
It's a long time till November and Shaheen has plenty of time for fence mending.  This ought to be a warning to other surrogates.

Anyone have any idea .. (0.00 / 0)
how Buckey is fairing in polls for the primary?  Has Shaheen disavowed her DLC past?

Buckey (4.00 / 1)
Jay Buckey has been largely ignored because everyone has assumed that this would be an easy pick up for the Dems with Shaheen as the candidate. But there was never any reason to assume that Shaheen, a DLC-style candidate, could knock over a relatively moderate Republican like Sununu. Worse still, haven't we all learned that having a majority of Dems in the Senate, regardless of their politics, is not the way to go? Shaheen would be very comfortable in Harry Reid's Senate, which is why she generates ZERO excitement among voters. Buckey's chances would be different from Shaheen's because he's running a progressive campaign. He just needs some love and some loot.

Once the DSCC has candidate (0.00 / 0)
I do not wonder that the others have dropped out Shaheen seems to be the DSCC's choice and it is hard to get past that in a primary.

Hard but not impossible (0.00 / 0)
Jay Buckey would make an ideal senator: he's an astronaut/doctor/engineer/professor/retired major in the Air Force Reserve who isn't taking any special interest money or money from PACs. I have heard him speak a number of times and people are VERY impressed when they meet him. I think with enough grassroots support, his campaign is in a good position to take off.

Buckey has a much better chance of winning (0.00 / 0)
New Hampshire has a tradition of voting for independent candidates from outside the political system.  The Governor and both Members of Congress are just the most recent examples.

A former Air Force officer and astronaut (and doctor and Dartmouth professor) who opposed the war and is running a positive high-tech oriented campaign will be a formidable opponent against John Sununu.  I just spent some time with Jay introducing him to progressive donors and high tech businesspeople in New York and Silicon Valley and he made quite a positive impression, and I think as the voters in New Hampshire get to know him his numbers (which are already comparable to Tom Allen's numbers against Susan Collins) will continue to rise.

And given the low turnout in the primary election this is a perfect opportunity for a grass-roots progressive victory against the centrist establishment.

Here he is talking about Net Neutrality:

Voter Genome Project

Half (4.00 / 1)
So Shaheen goes from 5 points up to 10 points down. That's a 15 point swing because her husband jumped on Obama with a heavy hand.  Obama is at around 30% of Democratic voters.  How many of those moved to Sunnunu because of this?  Half?  More?

So much for Hillary and her supporters ruining down ticket races.

I'm not so wild about Shaheen.  Too conservative on the war and on taxing corporations and the super wealthy.  Still, she'll be right a lot more often than Sununu.  Vote for Buckey in the primary?  Sure.  Just don't get stuck for six more years with Sununu in the general.

Times like these (4.00 / 1)
are going to require bold moves.  Being risk-averse hasn't really had such a good track record these last few years.

Dems are down everywhere (0.00 / 0)
the last few months. It's because of the constant folding in DC. Marginal Dems and Indies are telling pollsters they aren't going to vote.

I lived in NH in 2002 and tried to warn people about the Shaheens. (0.00 / 0)
The entire Shaheen clan is just not that impressive.  Jeanne sucks, and I mean, SUCKS as a campaigner.

At best her husband is a clumsy slob who has a bad case of motor mouth.  At worst, he's an anti-drug, racist moralistic crusader who would be at home with all these three strikes and you're out policies and minimum mandatory sentencing that make white GOP voters swoon.

The problem with these Shaheens is that they are totally ARROGANT and NEVER accept blame for anything.  Jeanne Shaheen never conceded she could have ran a better race last time.  She never admitted that her "me-tooisms" with John Sununu and her GOP-lite message had anything to do with losing in 2002.

She thinks this election should be hers as a coronation as the queen of the NH Democratic Party.

She sucks and I won't be crying if she loses in 2008.  Funny how a few months ago all the blogs were worshipping at the altar of this uber-establishment milquetoast DLC Democrat named Jeanne Shaheen.  Tell me, Shaheen boosters, where's she at now.

Well... (4.00 / 1)
In 2002, Republicans engaged in a criminal conspiracy because they so badly wanted to keep Jeanne Shaheen out of the United States senate. Despite their efforts, she came close - were you happy that Sununu, with his anti-environmental, anti-choice, record, won?

[ Parent ]
No, of course not, having voted for her and given her money. (0.00 / 0)
However, Sununu winning was more a result of Shaheen's terrible campaign than it was some phone calls that were blocked on election day.  Her losing margin was WAY more than any margin that could have been lost due to GOP illegalities of blocking calls.

Look, I don't like Sununu, but Shaheen has to accept some fault because of her campaign that, in a nutshell, failed to show ENOUGH contrast with Sununu and the Republicans.  Not showing enough contrast led to the lack of a COMPELLING reason why NH voters should oust an incumbent.  And that's up to the challenger's campaign.

As someone who worked for Jeanne (0.00 / 0)
in her first race for Governor, I have to disagree the idea that she sucks as a campaigner.

The racist comment is completely over the top.

Having said that I do wish Marchand had ran, and I suspect he will quickly regret not doing so.

Jeanne Shaheen will be an excellent senator (0.00 / 0)
As I posted on Blue Hampshire earlier today, should I make cookies for Santa, or examine the latest ARG poll? I believe in Santa, so I'll go make the cookies.

Jeanne Shaheen has a consistent, proven progressive record. If you check out her web site, you will see that her accomplishments in New Hamsphire on gay rights, the environment, choice issues, education, the economy, etc., with a Republican legislative majority, were impressive.

As Chris points out, Governor Lynch's numbers in this poll make no sense, either.  The UNH Survey Center, the most widely respected polling ouitfit in the state, has had Governor Lynch at favorables of over 70% since October, 2005.  In September and October, Governor Shaheen led Sununu 54 - 38.

I will point out that it is a little kept secret in New Hampshire that former Governor Sununu is doing everything he can to find a credible candidate to run against John Lynch, as he thinks it will help his son.  Now, we have a poll out that is different from every other poll we have seen, on both the Senate and gubernatorial races, naming a little named potential opponent against John Lynch, a mayor finishing his first term who just had a close re-election effort.  We do not know who paid for the ARG poll, and, if ARG is true to form we will not know the demographic background or other methodology used in the poll.

Lynch numbers (4.00 / 1)
This "poll" has NH Governor John Lynch only getting 48 percent. There is no way that Gov. Lynch is getting 48 percent against any opponent, and this "poll" matched him up against a relatively unknown mayor.

In 2006 ARG was the paid "pollster" for Gov. Lynch's opponent. Lynch won reelection in 2006 by a record breaking margin.

In 2000 ARG had Bush beating McCain in the NH primary when every real poll had McCain beating Bush by increasing margins.
