Conservative Rob Andrews Needs to Be Defeated

There's a primary going on in New Jersey between Rob Andrews, a conservative business oriented Democrat from South Jersey, and Frank Lautenberg, and old and liberal Senator.  Andrews is frustrated that he's going nowhere, and the South Jersey machine is feeling its oats and taking on North Jersey.  It's portrayed as young versus old or North versus South, but the reality is, policy-wise, it's conservative versus liberal.  And Andrews knows it, which is why he's trying to portray himself as identical to Lautenberg on the issues, only younger and more vital.

In a interview, Andrews did not want to characterize his political philosophy. "People we represent don't care what label we have. They care whether we are getting the job done, and I'm in the race because people want a change, the country wants a change," he said.

Andrews said he and Lautenberg have mostly the same policy goals, but suggested he has "more energy" to meet the challenges.

Andrews is just lying.  Aside from his ridiculous cheerleading on Iraq and his unapologetic support until relatively recently, there's his fealty to corporate interests.

Andrews, for example, joined GOP colleagues in supporting a fence along the Mexican border; backed legislation pushed by banks and credit card companies making it more difficult for people to erase their debts through bankruptcy; supported a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning; voted for the estate tax repeal; and opposed permanent normal trade relations with China.

So Andrews supported the Bankruptcy Bill, a fence along the Mexican border, the Iraq war, and eliminating the estate tax.  Other than that, there are no differences, he's just younger.

It is utterly disgusting that Andrews can so cavalierly dismiss real policy differences he has with Lautenberg.  If he wants to back putting poor people in hock to credit card companies, he should have the guts to do it instead of lying and pretending he shares the same policy goals as Lautenberg.  He doesn't, he never has, and it's reprehensible he would pretend otherwise.  Obviously they know their own state quite well, but I would hope that to the extent that they can, progressives in New Jersey work to defeat Andrews.

on who is running to replace Andrews in NJ-01? ActBlue shows only one challenger. Any hope for a more liberal member to replace Andrews?

I have mixed feelings on Lautenberg. If it's an Andrews v. Lautenberg match, then I support Lautenberg. However, in general I think some of these 'old lions' need to be replaced with more dynamic leaders -- like Rush Holt. I don't think Menendez is going anywhere, so this means we have six years of a reliably liberal vote, but not someone we can count on to help move or shape the progressive movement, generally.

Andrews on liberal issues (0.00 / 0)
A vote for war is indefensible but to be fair Lautenberg is on the record saying he supported the authorization to go to war, as well.  Clearly both men should have been reading more of the liberal blogosphere back during the buildup to war?

~~ ~~
On some issues Lautenberg is to the left of Andrews, and on others it's the other way around.  For example, when it comes rights for women, workers and GLBTs there are very few members of Congress as durably progressive as Rob Andrews.

And if you think this race is  not a generational thing, consider this personal anecdote: for the past two years i have tried to get a podcast and/or vlog  with Lautenberg via BlueJersey.com.

I reckoned if Governor Corzine, Senator Menendez, the entire Congressional delegation, cabinet members + state legislators can take the walk on the "Netroots" side, why not Lautenberg?    As recently as a month ago (before Andrews announced) i reached out one last time. His staff says "yeah let's do it."

So Lautenberg remains the only NJ politician of note to never engage the blogosphere.  Not that he owed us anything, but this  did stand him in stark contrast to all the others.

Ironically the first time i met Andrews was at some campaign stop and he comes up to comment on my fashionable Blue Jersey T-shirt.  He wanted to chat about the blogosphere, the netroots and all things "new media."   He also wanted to hear my thought about Net Neutrality.

Who me?

So on that one account, generationally speaking, the two could not be more different.

Which is one of the reasons I am gonna phonrbank for the Andrews campaign -- hopefully with at least two neighbors in tow-- tomorrow morning.
