Our first winner on American Blogger is adamterando, for his comment proposing to organize commenting on swing state newspapers.

Congradulations, Adam!  You can post a diary expanding on your comment any time this week and I will promote it to the front page.  Please check my user page & email me at least 1/2 day ahead of time to give me a heads up on when you're going to do it.

And for everyone else, the next contest repeats this weekend, with suggestions opening Friday afternoon (Pacific time) and voting opening on Saturday.

Please keep track of comments/ideas that would be worthy of pormoting in a front page diary next week--or even just kicking around a bit, because of where they might lead.  The top prize is a frontpage diary slot, but the overall purpose is to expand the life of good ideas, and give them a second chance to reach more people, spark more connections, and make this a richer environment for all of us to hang out in.

Winning comment is reproduced on the flip...

Swing State Newspaper Project

Pick a swing state newspaper and post comments on stories

The idea is to monitor one swing state newspaper each week until the election. Readers will monitor presidential (or just general) political coverage and post comments in news stories, especially stories about John McCain or Obama. The goal is to counter much of the right-wing blather that infests newspaper sites. To maximize the effect, either the editors will pick the newspaper of choice for the week, or users will vote on the newspaper. If a particular swing state is particularly important for more than one week, we can continue monitoring the same newspaper, or pick another paper in the state. The action will help to dispel right-wing myths propagated by both the media and right-wing commentators that inhabit newspaper sites. It will help provide information for those voters that read newspapers but do not read blogs.

In addition, since I'm a geographer, I like that it helps expose people to news from different areas of the country that they wouldn't otherwise be exposed too.

Congratulations Adam! (4.00 / 1)
I'm waiting for that front page report.  I live in Vermont, where Omaba is up 27.5 points on McCain, so I'm putting dibs on The Cleveland Plain Dealer, unless someone else in Cleveland wants it.

John McCain wants to privatize social security.

What I had in mind though is that we all do the same newspaper each week. So if we choose the CPD for one week, then we'll have the full force of every member at openLeft to monitor the newspaper. Of course, we can always comment on any site whenever we want! But the point is that if we focus our efforts, we can really make a dent in the information that is going to swing-state voters.

I'll be thinking more about this tomorrow and will probably have the post up either on Thursday or Friday.

It may be good to have different folks assigned to monitor different papers.  There are really lots of different ways that this could work.  So make your best pitch, and be prepared for folks to have all sorts of other ideas to toss  your way.

Whatever happens, though, I'm behind it.  I was part of a 3-person team in 2004 that focused attention on persuading papers that had endorsed Bush in 2000 to reverse their endorseents, so I'm defintely into this genre of activism.

I plan on laying out several options as I see it for how this could work and let's see if some consensus develops as to what's the best way to proceed.

I'll send you an email before I'm ready to post.

Great! (4.00 / 1)
I love it when I'm working with someone who's two or three steps ahead of me.

Running backwards is such a drag.

I love this idea (4.00 / 1)
A lot of people who never read blogs do check newspaper sites online. It's a mistake to let wingnuts dominate the comment sections on mainstream newspaper sites.

I need to take this advice myself. I've mostly neglected the Des Moines Register's comments section during the past year.

Bonus: (4.00 / 2)
OL-sourced comments will actually be legible, while the wingnut comments so rarely are.
I know that's why I don't read newspaper comment sections more.

John McCain is against children's health insurance, says CNN.

To the extent (4.00 / 1)
that newspaper comments sections allow html (which I'm unsure of), we should make a concerted effort to combine this with CB's "searching for McCain" initiative.

John McCain: Health insurance for low income children represents an "unfunded liability."

When I write the post I'll put this comment in there. Like you said, not sure how common it is for newspapers to allow html in comments, but it's worth scoping out.

Probably will not work (0.00 / 0)
My guess is most sites use nofollow tags in the comments that prevent links from increasing the pagerank of their target.

That said, it is a good way to increase the number of people who read those articles.

I support John McCain because children are too healthy anyway.
