Congratulations to Obama and America!

Congratulations to Senator Obama and to America really.  The first non-white Major Party Nominee.  Marvellous.

Whatever else, the media's obsession with their narrative on Hillary and her supporters did translate into actual coverage of the nomination vote, in fact CNN covered it start to finish with no interruptions and (amazingly) no one talking over it.  For a few minutes there, CNN truly was the "Best Political Team on Television."

Unquestionably it was classy of Hillary to personally call for nominating Barack by acclamation.  Cue more body language experts and maybe even a Harry Houdini seance to help the media psychically determine that Hillary is really planning to change parties tomorrow so she can attend the RNC and ensure Obama's defeat or something.

Consider this a convention open thread.

Update:  26 million watched yesterday.  5 times 2004's numbers.

Yes, Congratulations, But. (4.00 / 1)
We made a point in our house of celebrating the first major party nomination of an African-American candidate for POTUS.

But.

How can you call something "classy" which was obviously pre-planned for its news value and likely negotiated?

Newsworthy, perhaps, because the Illinois delegation did not get the honor of putting Obama over the top a la tradition.

Classy of Hillary Clinton, no.

If anyone had class in this situation, it's the delegates from Illinois.

Damn that Hillary (4.00 / 3)
Demanding that SHE gets to declare Obama the winner!  Damn here to Hell!

That's a little extreme. (0.00 / 0)
Dontcha think?

Irony? (0.00 / 0)
What's that?  Is that the same as sarcasm? cause I get them confused.  :-)

Ok, that video got me into an Otep mood, despite the intended irony, so how about something a bit more political?  Here is Otep Shamaya's speech on the Bush/McCain foreign policy, should she be invited to the convention:

I think he's making fun of someone (4.00 / 1)
who absolutely cannot give credit where credit is due.

I'd like to see you lose a hard fought race, by a slim margin, then go out there in front of God and everybody and nominate your opponent.

When you do that then you can tell us all how easy it is.

"Credit where credit is due!"

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Whoo-eee! Phew!

Oh, that's funny...

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! HA!

Seriously.

Sell something too hard, kiss too much ass, and it looks insincere, oversold, and phony, among other things, but not classy.

Sorry for crashing your righteous party. I'll leave those of you who march in lockstep with the Democratic Party to live in illusion for the rest of the evening.

Except (0.00 / 0)
You don't know what the fuck you are talking about.   You are making extremely uneducated and ignorant statements... as idiotic as the PUMAs who bitched that Obama wasn't there for Hillary's Speech... WHEN NOMINEES ARE NEVER THERE!

Obama ASKED for Hillary to do this.  It was one of the first things he asked for in the negotiations.

Okay, you hate Clinton, I get that. (0.00 / 0)
But can you try to keep the CDS on a leash until Nov 9 or so? Thanks a bunch.

Good golly "wandered in " we are the democratic party (0.00 / 0)
We don't march in lock step we help design the dance. Welcome to big tent. The republican leadership (and I use that word loosely) is going on the trash heap of history.

Brilliant political actions at the convention are to be attacked it seems.

Democrats are proving to be competent, attack that, they are proving to be popular, attack that, they are demostrating unity, attack that.

John McCain has Karl Rove. They cannot run away from it, they cannot say he isn't their leader, they cannot deny it. The Republican Party is not different today, their ledership is no different today, their philosophy is not different from Bush and Frist and Gingrich and Hassert. There is no running away.

They cant run away from lobbyists, from bad judgment, from incapacity.

In fact it seems the only thing they can do, is pour our money on their friends, that seems to be working just fine.

Um Hate to break it to you... (0.00 / 0)
But you should probably know the facts of the situation.  The facts of the situation is that Obama ASKED Hillary to put him over the top.  It was the Obama campaigns idea and NOT something that was demanded EVER by Hillary or her people.

"Go to C-SPAN for full podium coverage (0.00 / 0)
'CNN covered it start to finish with no interruptions and (amazingly) no one talking over it.  For a few minutes there, CNN truly was the "Best Political Team on Television." '

If you like that kind of coverage, go the C-SPAN.  It's their standard coverage.  Last night they were the only ones who showed Schweitzer's speech, except for PBS.  All the other networks substituted bloviators for what was the best speech of the night.

yep (0.00 / 0)
Oh I know, just giving credit where it was due.  You can also see it online in good resolution at

Wow, what a mediocre speaker.

Reid and Rockefeller were horrible (4.00 / 1)

to take a stab at appearing charismatic.

Of course it isn't working, but he sure talks loud.

Seriously, why don't the speechwriters just write this 100 times down for every speech?  Wow...  That's about the only "substance" I'm getting out of Evan Bayh. =)

History. (0.00 / 0)
Judgment and Capacity.

I just witnessed with a great deal of clarity. the delineation of the campaign. The delineation of the present political struggle. The central and singular question of the campaign demonstrated by the Democrats in convention, starring not just eloquent powerful historical Hillary Clinton, but amazing perfect surprising speeches from Kerry and Joe Biden's son and a brilliant speech from Bill Clinton. They demonstrated both judgment and capacity, they did what was the right thing to, the right judgment, and they pilled it off, they did it brilliantly. A wonderful demonstration of capacity. Judgment and capacity, it was wonderful to perceive. In the way they have run the contest they want they make decisions, they ways the handle complex problems, they demonstrate a singular ability to see what needs to be done and then the ability to get it done.

As many have read, and written, the early observation of one historically frustrated Democrat who "would always scream at his tv for another thing the Democrats have done" to stall their chances or for failing to invigorate the American people sick of the republican rule, but found himself, discovered himself, saying about another Obama action, "wow that's smart" not once but every time.

Thats the divide that seperates the two parties now. It's post partisan because now the divide is: judgment and lack of judgment, it is: capacity and its absence.

Obama ansd the Democratic party have judgemnt and capacity, they know where we are, what we need to do, and where we are going, and they have thje demonstrated skills and power and capacity to get it done.

The republicans do not have judgment, on the tanking economy, on the war, on rights, on Katrina and a government for the people they have bad judgment. McCain is just the poster 'child' for a lack of judgment, on social security, on more wars, "many more wars my friends" America is left to guess is it Russia? is it Iran? On his positions which switch over and over depending to who he speaks, whose positions change so often and wildly his campaign announces that McCain does not speak for the McCain campaign.

The Republicans cannot get it done, they do not have the ability. The present Republican leadership is so 'bad judgment' heavy, so ideological, so wron, so neo-con, so filled with thieves and hypocrites they cannot accomplish even the wrong headed, even the selfish, even the the things most want, the can't do. They can't win a war against a third world nation, that they should never have invaded. It has been far longer than it took FDR to defeat the Nazi German juggernaut. The cannot protect New Orleans, the cannot help the people devastated in Louisiana, the cannot stop the home mortgage meltdown, they cannot stop the dollars slide, the cannot affect the price of oil, they cannot protect Social Security. They cannot. That is their legacy, that is who they are.

McCain is just the poster child of incapacity. He cannot remember that Czechoslovakia is not only no more, they do not need our help. Al Queda, he needs to be reminded over and over, is not from Iran, they are enemies, Sunnis are not Shiites aides tell him, and the Russian actions in Georgia is not a greater crisis to America than 9/11.

If the Republicans don't stop questioning Obama because he is too young have the judgment of a Commander in Chief, even as he has demonstrated his wisdom warning against the Iraq war so so many years ago, then someone will have to say, "Barack Obama showed years ago, that he not too young for sound judgment sir, but your judgment, Senator McCain, is getting old."

Judgment and capacity.

You're wrong. (0.00 / 0)
Obama is not the first mixed race candidate, let alone President. - The United States has had at least 4 Presidents with 'African' blood.

It seems like 'someone' has not opened a history book in a while.

So um, been there - done that. yawn

Harding and who were the other three? (0.00 / 0)
Just because I'm curious.

It doesn't matter, since all of them were thought of as being white.  Obama is seen as black.  I'm sure the KKK thinks of him as such.

"Race" is not as simple as looking at some family tree and finding a black ancestor.  Obama is the first black candidate.
