Stupak Democrats to lose committee seats

A new statement from Majority Leader Steny Hoyer:

"The Leaders expect all House Democratic members to support this historic bill, and to do so without demanding new restrictions on women's rights" the spokesman said in an email. "There will be situations where we have some disagreement, but those Members who held the party's top legislative priority in order to send women's rights backward, it was a very serious matter and one that the Steering Committee will consider."

Pretty impressive.  Good to see Democrats starting to enforce some party discipline in order to stand up for core values.

Or, this is another lame April Fool's joke, comparing how Republican House leaders are actually threatening to revoke committee seats over something as minor as earmarks, but Democrats won't take action against the most serious instance of legislation hostage taking the party has experienced in a decade.

Rep. Rahall (WV-03) and Natural Resources Committee (?) (0.00 / 0)
It's a totally unrelated committee to reproductive freedoms, but I'm sure there's some non-mining state Reps. who would love the excuse to put someone who is more environmentally friendly on all issues in charge of that committee.

Overall, I think Rahall's been pretty good leading that committee except for the rather predictable support of one of his district's major employers.

I wonder if Hoyer's statement is also a warning in advance for climate change legislation.

I would go with the April fools joke explanation

I wasn't fooled even for a moment, because the scenario was much too implausible.

my April's Fools senses are probably getting too honed. Takes some of the fun out of it.

I also smelled it when reading fladem's Quick Hit about how Bill Nelson is quitting the Democratic Party... which he wrote fully believing the post about it at mydd, and deleted after realizing he'd been had. (Personally, fladem, I think you should've kept it up and claimed you were perpetuating the joke -- I never even thought otherwise until you said so.)

Pretty good, though the best April Fool's gags are the ones that are at least borderline believable.

If only it weren't a joke.

Stupak seems to have been quite populist and anti-corporate in his role as chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigation.  Who remembers this line of questioning?

can we start a whip count of the caucus? (0.00 / 0)
We need at least 10 to sign a petition according to the rules and put it to a vote. i think it can be done. HCR was too big to fail, maybe this can be our avenue.
