NEW POLL: Halter Leading in Primary Runoff

Last night DFA commissioned a poll from Research 2000 to see why Democratic voters went to the polls in Arkansas yesterday.

Here is what we found: Democrats in Arkansas want someone who will stand up for them, not stand with corporate lobbyists in DC. And, Bill Halter is ahead in the run-off 48-46.

Results from the Research 2000 poll:

Democrats in Arkansas believe Blanche Lincoln is on the side of lobbyists, not their side.
  • 46% say she is more on the side of lobbyists, 42% believe she is on their side.
  • 35% of Democratic voters believe Halter is on their side; only 14% believe he is more on the side of lobbyists.

Democrats in Arkansas want Democrats in Washington to fight harder against corporate special interests like Wall Street and Insurance Companies.
  • 53% said they don’t think Democrats in Washington are fighting hard enough against special interests.
  • 68% of Democrats say they would vote for a candidate who supports regulating Wall St over decreasing government spending.
  • 68% prefer candidates supported by progressive Democratic groups over Wall St. special interests.

Democrats in Arkansas believe health care reform is important and favor the bill Congress passed.
  • 87% said health care reform was important.
  • 47% favor the bill Congress passed. 38% oppose it. (52% who oppose say it does not go far enough)
  • 77% favor the national government offering a Medicare buy in to compete with private insurance.

is really quite absurd.

Taking on Wall Street IS A FRICKEN RIGHT OR LEFT ISSUE.  Conservatives, as evidence by the former SEC chair Chris Cox, don’t believe in regulation.  Most people believe in the liberal position: that they should be regulated.  

What is actually happening is that people who call themselves conservative actually hold liberal beliefs.  Explaining that connection is in fact the very work that needs to be done to build a lasting progressive consensus.

Only if you by into the absurd idea that there is a coalition to be had by Ron Paul does this statement make nay sense.  This statement is in fact like Obama saying he believes in a post partisan consensus.  

To the poll:
If I read the numbers correctly 47 supported the existing HCR.  Those who opposed it pretty much exactly split between those who thought it went too far and those who thought it didn’t go far enough.  

This poll obviously will help stiffin Lincoln’s spine with respect to derivatives, where she very much has been attacking Wall Street.

by the time the runoff happens, it’ll already be law, and if it’s not, then the problem is beyond Lincoln.

This is how a democracy works…I know those of us think people get elected merely to do the right thing, but if that were true, we would elect them for life…people run for reelection to be forced to do the right thing…or whatever his or her constituents want, which isn’t always the right thing.

 The idea of regulating derivatives — indeed, of passing ANY legislation — simply because it’s the right thing to do is completely foreign to most of our elected officials.

  Even when doing the right thing is the popular thing to do. The Democrats don’t want to pass legislation that serves the public interest — they just want to appear to pass legislation that serves the public interest without actually doing so.

  Blanche needs to go. But she’s just a symptom of the deep rot in Washington. Deep bipartisan rot.

Exactly. This is not a left or right issue for voters. It’s common sense. Only in Washington is it left or right issue.

Which is the same for a lot of issues… Look at unemployment.   9.9% unemployment and there is actually DEBATE on whether and how to fund it?  Really?   There is little support to add a new tier to help those who have reached their limit but no shortage of politicians calling the long term unemployed lazy and unmotivated.  The GOP is the party of moral bankruptcy and unfortunately, there are many dems who at least some of the time fall into that group.

Unemployment funding runs out in about 2 weeks.    Nothing has really been done to extend it to the end of the year and there is no support for a Tier V.   Unbelievable.   I want Reid to force the GOP to vote against unemployment repeatedly as well.

They’re not mutually exclusive.

“Common sense”, btw, is one of the the biggest non-statements used in politics, cuz it’s totally subjective.  Everyone thinks that their particular position is “common sense”.
