Analysis in the extended entry.

Chris Bowers :: Senate Forecast, 8/22: Franken and Hagen Catch Up
A lot of movement since the last update on August 13th:
  • In Alaska, Begich's lead continues to grow. Right now, it looks like the only way he could lose is if Stevens is not on the ballot. Unfortunately, with the Republican primary on Tuesday, that is actually possible.
  • In Georgia, Democratic Al Martin has shot way up in the polls, and now only trails incumbent Saxby Chambliss by 6.0%.
  • In Louisiana, the only poll in the last month shows incumbent Democrat Mary Landrieu pulling away.
  • In Minnesota, Democrat Al Franken reduces his deficit from 8.3% to only 3.0%.
  • In New Mexico, the only poll taken this month shows Democrat Mark Udall's lead cut to 8% from around 20%.
  • In North Carolina, Democrat Kay Hagen has cut her deficit from 8.4% to 5.0%.

All in all, lots of good news for Democrats. The only negative spot, New Mexico, still shows Udall well ahead. If Democrats sweep the seats where they are either ahead or within single-digits, then they will hit 60 seats without Lieberman. That is a pretty hefty total, even if I don't quite accept 60 as a magic number to reach.

Also, I am now using exactly the same methodology that I use for the presidential forecast.

Georgia isn't an open seat (4.00 / 1)
Also am not sure I would rank it as leans R from just one poll. Same goes for New Mexico. Rasmussen has had quite a few senate outliers this cycle so I would wait for confirmation of a tightening before I buy into a Pearce surge.

Georgia is not an open seat. Saxby Chambliss is a freshman senator, and a genuine jackass too.

Also, his opponent is Jim Martin, not Al Martin. He looks a bit like George McFly, which is a problem considering the war chest Saxby is sitting on to define him with, however once he speaks he commands instant respect. He comes across as very humble, thoughtful, genuine, and competent. With the right investment from the DSCC, the Georgia senate race absolutely is winnable.

Yup, and Saxby Chambliss (0.00 / 0)
sounds like Foghorn Leghorn.

I desperately want that to catch on. (And I'm serious about the voice)

MN & NC & OR (0.00 / 0)
Obama has a great reason to keep focusing on North Carolina and Oregon, and to (start?) focusing on Minnesota. So much of the success of his presidency will depend on exactly how large the Democratic majority is in the Senate - if his ground game can help flip those 3 Senate seats, which all look to be within reach, it would be well worth the effort.

Looking at the past US Senate Races. (0.00 / 0)
2006- Democrats were Favored to Pick up (PA,OH,RI), MO,MT were tossups. Republicans had an Advantage in (VA,TN)until the Macaca incident.
2004- Democrats were Strongly Favored to Pick up(IL) and Slightly Favored to Pick up CO. Republicans were strongly favored to pick up GA and SC. AK,FL,LA,NC,and SD were tossups.
2002- Democrats were Favored to Pick up AR and hold on to GA-before the Swift Boat ads and MN- before Wellstone's tragic death. MO,NH,and SD were tossup races.
2000- Democrats were Favored to Pick up(DE,MN,FL). Republicans were Favored to Pick up (NV,and VA). Republicans had a slight advantage in in MI,MO(Before Carnahan's tragic death).and WA.
1998- Democrats were Favored to pick up (IN and NY). IL was a tossup due to Carol Moseley Braun Scandals. NC -was a surprising pickup for Democrats. (Edwards win over Faircloth was a surprise).
1996- Republicans were favored to pick up AL. AR,GA,LA,OR and SD were tossups. Republicans had a slight advantage in ME. Democrats had a slight advantage in NE.

In 2008- Democrats are Favored to Pick up VA,NM,AK,NH,and CO. MS-B,MN,NC,and OR are tossups. GA,ID,KS,KY,ME,OK,and TX were surprise races.  Democrats are going to win MN,NC,and OR.

Andrew Rice-Oklahoma (0.00 / 0)
Has a poll showing him within nine points of Inhofe.  The previous poll of this race showed a 22 point spread.  Rice is closing, and fast.  Inhofe is at fifty percent, a tipping point for any incumbent.

When does this race get the respect it deserves?

what is it about Collins (0.00 / 0)
that Maine residents like? She is obviously not as moderate as she claims to be.

Good to see Franken closing the gap there. I would be sick to see Coleman re-elected.
