The Honeymoon's Over: Tell The Democrats To Pass Medicare-For-All. Now. Stop The Shake-Downs, Stop The Corruption, Stop The Betrayal.

The Democrats announced early this year that they were really mad at the credit card industry, they were really going to make some "reforms" of that industry to help the public. So they set up a bunch of meetings between the No-Change President and the CEOs of the major credit card companies. And the Democrats in Congress met with the major credit card companies. Presumably to negotiate enormous bribes to be paid by the credit card companies to the Democrats. What you call a Shakedown.

Because after those secret meetings, there was no "reform" of the credit card industry. Instead, the Democrats passed some completely toothless and meaningless law that says before the credit card industry sends Guido and Carmine out to bust people's knees, they've got to send a written notice. Whoopie. Despite the efforts of a few politicians to have real reform, which means to limit the amount of interest that can be charged to consumers for loans, the Democrats refused to support any such limits. The Democrats refused to pass a law that would "limit" the credit card companies to "only" charging 37% per year on loans. As far as the Democrats are concerned, the higher interest that's charged to the citizens of this country by the credit card companies, the bigger the kick-backs and bribes paid to the Democrats.

And now we're seeing the same type of manipulation and deception by the Democrats in connection with their promise to "reform" healthcare. First they announce, through several leaders, that they're not going to have single-payer. Then they refuse to even meet with representatives from groups supporting single-payer, and refuse to let those people have a voice in Congress. To explain, for example, that the most cost-effective reform, the one that would provide the most healthcare and save the most money, would be a single-payer system.

Instead, we have a series of secret meetings between No-Change Obama and the leading Democrats, on the one hand, and the CEOs of the Medical Industry on the other hand, presumably shake-down meetings in which the Democrats agree they won't reform anything in healthcare if the Medical Industry pays the politicians enough money in bribes.

Sold out again. Betrayed. Abandoned and deceived.

First No-Change Obama comes out and announces that some of the big CEOs have "promised" they will "really really really" try to not raise how much they charge us so much. Ten years from now, they will really really try. No enforcement mechanism, nothing in writing -- spit is what it is. Meaningless nonsense.

Now we hear that No-Change Obama has also negotiated some deal with the Drug Dealers by which they promise they will really really really try not to charge so much. Meaningless. These Medical Industry people have been raping the American public for decades, and they aren't going to change unless we force them. How much money did the Drug Dealers promise to kick-back to the Democrats in exchange for the Democrats doing nothing to control the prices that average people have to pay.

The Democrats have the majority in Congress and can do anything they want. What they should do is pass Medicare for all. Anybody who wants to stay with private insurance should do so. Anybody who wants to join Medicare should be allowed to do so. People with sufficient income should be required to pay something to buy into the system, something like a premium but a lot less expensive. And anyone who goes into Medicare would be saved from the private insurance company's practice of dumping people as soon as they get sick, or raising their premiums to they are unaffordable.

The Democrats claim that the mean old Republicans won't let them do a Medicare for All. Nonsense. The Democrats have the majority and can pass anything they want.

Some apologists claim that Obama wants to represent all the people, and there aren't enough people who support Medicare for all. Another lie designed to cover up corruption.

The New York Times reports today that in a poll conducted last week, they found that 72% of the public supports Medicare for all.

"The national telephone survey, which was conducted from June 12 to 16, found that 72 percent of those questioned supported a government-administered insurance plan - something like Medicare for those under 65 - that would compete for customers with private insurers. Twenty percent said they were opposed. " http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06...
If the Democrats don't pass a Medicare-for-all system which allows anyone to join Medicare, then they are useless.

Think about it. They give hundreds of billions of dollars to Wall Street and the Banks, who kick back millions to the politicians individually. They vote hundreds of billions of dollars to fund more wars in which our military is being used as a private mercenary goon squad on behalf of the Oil Corporations, committing international war crimes, torture, kidnapping, and murder across the world. And they ignore the public's demands that these wars be ended.

They refuse to enforce the laws against the wealthy and powerful by establishing commissions to investigate and prosecute, and seize assets, for the financial crimes and the war crimes committed in recent years in this country. Not one person in our government will even allow hearings to be held to investigate the clear evidence of crimes by the top people from Wall Street and the top people from the Bush-Cheney administration. What do you call a government that refuses to enforce the laws against the rich and powerful? Certainly not a democracy.

We have an actual unemployment level of 17%, predicted to go higher every single month through 2009 and possibly through 2010, and the Democrats have failed to do anything to create jobs programs or jobs for Americans. Instead, they are supporting more trade agreements to send more American jobs out of this country, throw more people out of work.

Being a Democrat is like having the boyfriend who never calls, having the boss who never makes payroll, having the spouse who never brings home their paycheck because they spend it on themselves.

They ignore us, they ridicule us and what we want, they tell us we're stupid and we don't know what we're talking about, they tell us to shut up because they'll do what they want, when we demand our rights they say we're nagging, when we demand attention they tell us they're too busy with somebody else. I'm beginning to feel like I've got the battered spouse syndrome: they beat me up, steal my money, treat me bad, lie to me, cheat on me, then show up on Sunday evening and expect me to have a pot roast on the table, cold beer in the frig. One day they're going to show up on Sunday and we'll all be gone.

Exactly. For 8 years I felt like a child in a dysfunctional family with Bush as leader (0.00 / 0)
I cannot tell you how anxious I felt. Like a child in the backseat with two drunk parents driving in the car. (I once had a patient who used to go through that.) So it's even more than battered spouse, although it is that also.

The guys and gals in congress are not the brightest bulbs in the box, but they sure know the redneck Snopes game to a T. It works, doesn't it?

"Obama is bad" - compared to whom? / the fight for change is not over (0.00 / 0)
I posted a diary a while back, called "Obama is bad" - compared to whom?
I keep seeing articles that make me want to re-post it. Your article above is one.
I do agree with you that Obama has been disappointing. He is a moderate rather than a Progressive. However, Obama is 100% better than Bush (who vetoed SCHIP twice). And even though I think HR 676 is by far the best way to achieve universal health care, if Obama can pass his public option, he will have done better than Bill and Hillary on health care.
And what you said about Obama's approach to war ("They vote hundreds of billions of dollars to fund more wars in which our military is being used as a private mercenary goon squad on behalf of the Oil Corporations, committing international war crimes, torture, kidnapping, and murder across the world. And they ignore the public's demands that these wars be ended."), sounds hysterical. I am disappointed that Obama is not withdrawing from Iraq faster. But I am not opposed to him escalating the war in Afghanistan, which is where bin Laden planned the 9/11 attacks. For years, Obama said "I am not opposed to all wars; I am opposed to dumb wars". He told the American people that he would stop wasting our dollars and our soldiers' lives in Iraq, but that he would vigorously defend America in other places, like Afghanistan. He is basically doing what he said he would do, and I mostly support his actions.
Finally, NABNYC, I want you to know that I share some of your disappointment, but I think you are not expressing that disappointment in a constructive manner. I agree with Darcy Burner that what America needs is "more and better Democrats". Our current congress (both houses) is full of Blue Dogs and moderates and people that talk like Progressives and then get payoffs and vote like Moderates or even Conservatives. But... what do we do about it? I do not regret a single dollar or a single minute that I spent to kick Republicans out of congress and the White House. The Republicans basically say openly that they want to sell America to the highest corporate bidder; the Democrats are not as quick to obey the corporations.
I think that instead of saying "woe is me", we Progressives should fight for the changes we want. We can fight to seat Al Franken. We can fight to support Joe Sestak over Arlen Specter. We can send the White House and Congress a barrage of phone calls, emails, letters, and petitions to show that we support HR 676 and/or a public option on health care. We can fight for what we believe in.
Or, we could just sit around and whine.
I plan to fight. What about you?

Luke 12:48 "to whom much is given, of him shall much be required". Would Jesus want progressive taxation, or regressive taxation?

Honest Criticism Is Not The Problem. (0.00 / 0)
I stand by my comments.  To date, the Democrats, in control of Congress and the White House, have done absolutely  nothing to help the American people.  Nothing.  They give billions to the rich and to the war industry, continue the illegal wars, refuse to investigate or prosecute despite international treaties which require them to do so and despite irrebutable evidence of serious crimes, they have done nothing to create jobs for the unemployed.  The credit card "reform" was a con and accomplished nothing.  Exactly what did I say that was untrue?

My reaction to this consistent pattern from the Democrats is anger and a sense of betrayal.  Why shouldn't it be?  Am I stupid?  Should I just chant "Hope" and not examine the facts?

You may personally support Obama in his wars in the middle east, but I don't.  Remember, the justification for the war in Afghanistan was the 9/11 attacks, and the claim that we were going to invade Afghanistan to "get" bin Laden.  Everyone knows bin Laden is gone.  So why are we still there?

Apparently the new plan is to create a standing army of 240,000 people in a country with a population estimated 34 million.  That's our goal:  to militarize the country.  For what purpose?  To protect the oil pipeline for the Oil Corporations.

The same reason we built the fortress/embassy in Iraq and admittedly plan to stay for at least 10 years, militarily occupy Iraq while the Oil Corporations steal its resources.  The same reason we have a constant threat and reported invasion of Iran (with special forces and millions of dollars):  to grab complete control of the region and steal the oil.  Does anyone really believe our motives in Afghanistan are pure?

In addition to international war crimes and murder, I can't help but recognize that the hundreds of billions of dollars being spent on these wars is just another corporate taxpayer subsidy for the war industry and the Oil Corporations. Every penny spent on these wars could be spent here at home to increase Social Security to compensate people for the 50% of their pensions stolen by Wall Street, to create jobs, to rebuild schools, to fund public health and dental care for everyone.

Our states are broke.  Wake up.  We can't afford this disaster called the American Empire.  We need to stand up against the continued War Model of Nationhood because it is our own homeless, broke, hungry, unemployed citizens whose money has been stolen and sent to Halliburton and Chevron because they are murderous and greedy, and because our politicians are corrupt.

As far as where do we go from here, your question is legitimate.  I don't know.  But I do think we need to throw away the rose-colored glasses and look clearly at the Democrats, who have been the corporate party since the Clinton/McCauliffe unfortunate influence which led the Democrats to abandon working people and minority rights, and to instead support corporate rights.  Like the EFCA:  how can the party of labor refuse to help the unions?  Bribes, kick-backs and corruption, that's how.

My point is this:  for me, the health care issue is the last straw.  If the Democrats fail to do anything to help people in this country, to get control of the Medical Industry, given the amount of money which the Democrats have taken from the CEOs in the Medical Industry, then that's it for me.  I won't be fooled any longer.

I don't think it is a good use for us to target individual Democrats for removal from office through elections.  I think the right approach is to go after the party as a whole.  If the Democratic leadership wanted single-payer, Medicare for All, the people with the purse strings would simply lean on the others and they would have the votes.  Just like they did for the War Funding and the Euro-Trash Bailout bill last week, billions more of taxpayer money going for war while Americans get nothing.

I am self-employed and buy my own health insurance.  My premiums just went up by 13%, and I'm terrified that if I ever got something wrong with me (thank god nothing so far) they would raise the premiums so I could not afford them.  This is really a life and death issue, and I refuse to compromise my position because of strategic maneuvering and bribe-negotiations by corrupt politicians who keep telling me they represent me.

If they don't make a significant change in the healthcare system, they will not represent me anymore, because I will change my registration to independent.  This is the last straw for me.  So let's see what they do.

single payer / Af-Pak war / Iraq war / Howard Dean and Darcy Burner (0.00 / 0)
I get health insurance from my employer. At my company, everyone's health insurance premiums went up 20% over the past year, and no one got a pay increase. So I can relate to your experience there.
As for the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, please recall that the 9/11 attacks were planned and carried out by Al Qaeda, which was sheltered and supported by the Taliban of Afghanistan. We went into Afghanistan for the well-justified reason of national self-defense. Al Qaeda still has a major presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and as long as Al Qaeda is there, our military should be there as well.
Iraq was a different story. We were told that Saddam had (or would soon develop) WMD's, which would soon be used against us by him, or sold by him to Al Qaeda. That entire scenario turned out to be completely false (though it is still unclear how much of that scenario was an honest mistake, how much was incompetence, and how much was deliberate lies). So, every American soldier's life and every American taxpayer dollar that was expended in Iraq, was a complete waste. That is why I support the fastest possible withdrawal from Iraq, but I also support escalation in the Af/Pak war. (But I do also want us to fight Af/Pak in a legal and ethical way - no torture, minimal damage to civilians, etc. And I also want Af/Pak to be efficient, where the smallest loss of American life and money will achieve the greatest degree of victory over Al Qaeda.)
Please recall Obama's statement "I am not opposed to all wars; I am opposed to dumb wars." I agree with Obama's statement. And furthermore, even if you personally are opposed to all wars, do you think that "oppose all wars" is a winning election slogan?
I will not pretend that Obama is a true Progressive, for he is not. He is a moderate. But he is far, FAR better than our 8-year Bush nightmare, and in some ways he is better than Bill Clinton.
What we really need is neither a fawning and uncritical worship of the "Obamessiah", nor the impractical extremism of Ralph Nader, who said that "there is not a dime's worth of difference between Democrats and Republicans". We need to realize that the typical Democrat today IS too far to the Right, and yet also realize that third parties cannot win, and the Democrats cannot be redeemed overnight. Of all the voices in politics today, the two best are Howard Dean and Darcy Burner. We need to strengthen "the Democratic wing of the Democratic party", and we need to elect "more and better Democrats".
Bringing back the old Democratic party of FDR and LBJ is going to be a long, hard fight. But it is the only hope for the future of our country, and so it is a fight that we must wage.

Luke 12:48 "to whom much is given, of him shall much be required". Would Jesus want progressive taxation, or regressive taxation?

I linked to a CommonDreams.org article wherein the so-called "public option" is exposed for the sham it is.  The right-wing Democrats are steadfast in their determination to stand with the Republicans on denying We the People even that watered down drop from the oligarchs.

We've had to endure Democrats' excuses for decades.  No more.  If they won't represent the public, then the public must abandon them just as it did the GOP.  No more excuses.
