More Muslim than ever

The Washington Post Reports:

Poll shows more Americans think Obama is a Muslim

The number of Americans who believe -- wrongly -- that President Obama is a Muslim has increased significantly since his inauguration and now accounts for nearly 20 percent of the nation's population.

Those results, from a new Pew Research Center survey, were drawn from interviews done before the president's comments about the construction of an Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero, and they suggest that there could be serious political danger for the White House as the debate continues.

The president's religion, like his place of birth, has been the subject of Internet-spread rumors and falsehoods since before he began his presidential campaign, and the poll indicates that those rumors have gained currency since Obama took office. The number of people who now correctly identify Obama as a Christian has dropped to 34 percent, down from nearly half when he took office.

....

More than a third of conservative Republicans now say Obama is a Muslim, nearly double the percentage saying so early last year. Independents, too, are now more apt to see the president as a Muslim: Among independents, 18 percent say he is a Muslim, up eight percentage points.

More than anything, what suggests to me is the severe danger that comes from lying to the American people.  The Bush Administration did it all the time.  Obama promised to clean things up.  But he didn't.  He lied about that.  He thought that if he just played nice, the Republicans would play nice, too.  So there was no need to "look backward", and examine all the sordid, mean, and nasty--not to say lethal and illegal--things the GOP had done.

Well, he was wrong.  Because there was no catharsis, the bile just kept on building up.  And my fear is that now things are just about to get really nasty.

I sure hope I'm wrong on this one.

"Muslim" (4.00 / 2)
I've long noticed people tend to lump all positive things together and all negative things together.  If you suggest some action wasn't terrorism, for example, they might angrily respond "how can you defend something like that?"

So I'm curious how many people actually think Obama is Muslim as opposed to people who think claiming otherwise would be defending him, and then choose not to.  Since this kind of thinking is largely unconscious, I wonder how many even know the difference.

People can always say they don't know.

I pretty much think that sooner or later you've got to believe what people are saying about their own beliefs.

After all, a whole lot of people believe that Mel Gibson can act.

It's an opportunity to say something Negative about Obama! (4.00 / 1)
It's a "symbolic truth" to them. If they say "I don't know" they miss their chance to attack Obama in the poll. They just hate Obama the way I hate Bush.

I wonder if they'd given a poll back in 2006 if they could have said:

"1/3 of all liberal Democrats think Dick Cheney is a robot!"

I would have said "yes" if asked! Would I have believed it? No. But it so perfectly captures Dick Cheney's personality that the supermarket tabloid Weekly World News put that on their cover!

I doubt this means anything more than "he's not one of us." Not a "real American." It's just like "He's a Kenyan socialist."

Do they really think he was born in Kenya? Their attitude is "who cares?" He MIGHT JUST AS WELL BE Kenyan because he's not a "real American." So, calling him a "Kenyan socialist" captures their view of Obama perfectly.

Bender is a robot.  Bender is good.  Irascible?  Of course!  But basically good at heart.  Dick Cheney is not good.

Dick Cheney is Cthulhu.

Physicality and origins

While the birthplace of Cthulhu is not definitively established, it is suggested that it is the planet Vhoorl, with his advent somehow connected with supernovae: "I learned whence Cthulhu first came, and why half the great temporary stars of history had flared forth."[7] It is also suggested in both At the Mountains of Madness and "The Whisperer in Darkness" that Cthulhu is made up of some unknown and foreign matter.

The most detailed descriptions of Cthulhu appear in the short story "The Call of Cthulhu", and are based on the statues of the creature. One, constructed by an artist after a series of baleful dreams, is said to have "yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature.... A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque scaly body with rudimentary wings."[8] Another, recovered by police from a raid on a murderous cult, "represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind."[9]

When the creature finally appears, the story says that the "thing cannot be described", but it is called "the green, sticky spawn of the stars", with "flabby claws" and an "awful squid-head with writhing feelers". The phrase "a mountain walked or stumbled" gives a sense of the creature's scale.[10]

Cult of Cthulhu

Cthulhu is depicted as having a worldwide doomsday cult centered in Arabia, with followers in regions as far-flung as Greenland and Louisiana.[11] There are leaders of the cult "in the mountains of China" who are said to be immortal. Cthulhu is described by some of these cultists as the "great priest" of "the Great Old Ones who lived ages before there were any men, and who came to the young world out of the sky."[12]

The cult is noted for chanting the phrase "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn", which translates as "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."[13] This is often shortened to "Cthulhu fhtagn", which might possibly mean "Cthulhu waits", "Cthulhu dreams",[14] or "Cthulhu waits dreaming." [15]

One cultist, known as Old Castro, provides the most elaborate information given in Lovecraft's fiction about Cthulhu. The Great Old Ones, according to Castro, had come from the stars to rule the world in ages past.
They were not composed altogether of flesh and blood. They had shape...but that shape was not made of matter.
When the stars were right, They could plunge from world to world through the sky; but when the stars were wrong, They could not live. But although They no longer lived, They would never really die. They all lay in stone houses in Their great city of R'lyeh, preserved by the spells of mighty Cthulhu for a glorious resurrection when the stars and the earth might once more be ready for Them.[16]

Sure sounds like cult of Cthulhu=Neocons to me.  And R'lyeh = "undisclosed location."

It's a good point. (0.00 / 0)
Although I'm more inclined to take people are their word on these things. A person who is simply going along with his neighbors on something like this will almost certainly start believing it at some point. So if they don't know it yet, they will sometime soon. Positive reinforcement does wonders in this area.

Without seeing the cross-tabs, my own guess is we're seeing bubbles of this belief grown in clusters, where such views are more likely to be majoritarian. I seriously doubt, for instance, one out of five in Brooklyn think this way. But out in rural Texas, it's probably a very common notion, much higher than 20% and closer to 60%.

In the survey, 26% of those who say Obama is a Muslim still give him a positive job approval.

I think part of it is that conservatives are just more willing to take a stand and don't like picking the "don't know column".  If you look at the breakdowns, of those who don't say that Obama is a Christian, 50% of conservative Republicans say that he is a Muslim.  Meanwhile, 84% of liberal Democrats who don't say that Obama is a Christian say that they don't know Obama's religion.  (It may concern some that 31% of self-described liberal Democrats say they don't know what religion Obama is.)

Bank Shot? (4.00 / 1)
Probably this is too clever by half, but what are the odds that tagging Obama as a Muslim and ginning up the rubes with a Ground Zero mosque story end up as a single emotion/perception in the minds of the rubes? That it reinforces and exacerbates the otherness of Obama to these people?

Probably it's just a feature, not something intentional in either story?

Absolutely. That's very much the point. (4.00 / 1)
Since Obama is black, a bigot can't accept that he's a "real Merkin." The word "muslim" is just code for "colored" and "foreign." Making him a "muslim" only intensifies the fear, since it was "the muslims" (and all "muslims" are just the same!) that blew up the WTC. So on and so forth.

It's just a slightly more nuanced version of Rwandan Public Radio in the early 90s.

Now we're going to be subjected to Obama and Michelle leaving church every Sunday morning just to prove he's not a heathen.  Gag.

No (0.00 / 0)
They will try to prove that the Obamas are christians and not muslims. "Heathen" has nothing to do with it.

Unless you meant to imply that anyone that is not christian is a heathen, in which case we'll have to start a different conversation.

...but the BS has already begun:

"The White House insisted on Thursday that President Barack Obama is a Christian who prays daily as it looked to tamp down growing doubts among Americans about the president's religion."

I don't give a damn what "religion" anyone is - as long as they live by "Treating others the same way they want to be treated"....which all of our "leaders" - including Obama (who cannot lead his way out of a paper bag) fail to do.

Goebbels would have given his eyeteeth to have a propaganda machine as large and effective as FOX News. It essentially serves to coordinate the GOP base.

You understand, once they find the right demagogue, Glenn Beck will just tell his audience to go out and vote for the guy, and they'll vote for him. And if he suggests they should go out and do something, uh, permanent, to the opposition, they'll eagerly do that too.

A fanatical, dedicated minority can seize control of the government during a time of crisis, if the vast majority is lethargic, confused, and atomized. We saw it again and again in the last century and we are seeing it now in America.
