Obama loses an arm & a leg in negotiations with GOP cannibals; touts "progress"

by: Paul Rosenberg

President Obama was in surgery this afternoon at Walter Reed Hospital, after GOP Senators had finished feasting on his right arm and leg, but Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was upbeat.

"The President thinks we made real progress today toward his goal of bipartisan compromise," Gibbs said. "He gave up an arm and a leg, and Senators McConnell, McCain, Kyle, and DeMint gave up almost an hour of their precious time," Gibbs explained.  He dismissed what he called "dead-enders in the professional left" who complained that Obama had "given up too much."

"I'm sure there are those on the other side who feel that the Republicans didn't get enough," Gibbs said.  But then he admitted that another lunch was scheduled for tomorrow.

"Aren't you afraid that after tomorrow, Obama won't have a leg left to stand on?" Gibbs was asked by a reporter whose name cannot be repeated for national security reasons.  He was immediately whisked away by Secret Service agents.

"We're all encouraged by the President's new spirit of bipartisan cooperation," said Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska.  "It's just unfortunate that it's taken so long for him to begin to show some real consideration for the views of others."

"This is a very hopeful sign," wrote David Broder, in an unprecedented front-page Op-Ed in the Washington Post.  "The Republican senators deserve high praise for having the patience to wait for the President to finally pay attention to them.  All Americans owe them a profound debt of gratititude for not having him assasinated years ago."

But others worried that the President's change of heart had come too late.

"We all had such high hopes," New York Times columnist David Brooks lamented in private. "If only he had done this on day one, he could have been truly a great president.  As it is, he won't even be able to feed the entire Senate."

And still others were openly disdainful. Former Speaker Newt Gingrich called it "a cheap stunt."

"Leaders lead from day one," said talkshow host Rush Limbaugh. "This is so many days late, I can't count on my fingers don't know how you call it anything but pathetic."

Fox News host Glenn Beck called it "a clever Communist trick," shaking his head.  "Hitler is kicking himself in the head," Beck added.  "If only he'd thought of it, he would have won WWII."

"Real leadership requires real sacrifice," Gingrich pontificated. "I just don't think that Obama has it in him."

Not any more, at least.

I like the idea that the Republicans are up at the White House, imagining precisely that they are feasting on this guy, while the House passes middle class tax cuts by being clever and precluding Republican manoeuvering, and Obama keeps them on the string while Reid figures out how to vote on the House bill by Saturday.

Why does everyone take everything so literally? Can't anyone imagine Obama is playing them?

It will be interesting to see what actually happens.

hahahahahahahahaha (4.00 / 11)
Yeah, he's playing them. We know this because he's demonstrated his capacity to do this in the past. Oh, and he shares our values.

I happened to watch a part of the movie on tv over Thanksgiving when my brother-in-law came across it flipping through channels. He said the book was worse.

Yeah, gruesome. I didn't continue watching.

That said, delightful diary. Enjoyed it immensely.

I didn't think cannibalism. I went straight to

and laughed out loud.

Written by highly skilled and usually humorous author Gregory McDonald (you may know his "Fletch" series and movies with Chevy Chase). Shocking book about desperate guy taking part in snuff movie. Only read it once, couldn't touch it ever again. Can't imagine to see the movie starring Johnny Depp (!) either.

Flunking Econ 101 (4.00 / 4)
"The President continues to believe that extending middle class tax cuts is the most important thing we can do for our economy right now and he applauds the House for passing a permanent extension.  But, because Republicans have made it clear that they won't pass a middle class extension without also extending tax cuts for the wealthy, the President has asked Director Lew and Secretary Geithner to work with Congress to find a way forward.  Those discussions started just yesterday and are continuing this afternoon.  The talks are ongoing and productive, but any reports that we are near a deal in the tax cuts negotiations are inaccurate and premature."

Statement by the WH Press Secretary

Politics is the art of the possible, but that means you have to think about changing what is possible, not that you have to accept it in perpetuity.

For a smart guy, Obama has a lot of studying to do.

Obama knows exactly what he is doing. (4.00 / 3)
He is giving the rich a hugh tax cut that drives up the deficit and gives the cat food commission more reason to trash Social Security, etc.  All the while he pretends to be putting the middle class first.  The bipartisanship act is kabuki theatre designed to placate the base and give him cover as the economy continues to flounder.

So it's interesting how Obama can play this weak capitulating character, sell out the interests of the middle class, and we just scratch our heads and wonder why he isn't standing his ground?

We are letting Obama off the hook for this betrayal when we attribute his actions to timidity or overly optimistic politics.  It's high time to recognize that Obama is playing three dimensional chess--against us--and we are losing.

[ Parent ]
No (4.00 / 2)
The reasons for his actions cannot excuse those actions. Actions must be judged on their own terms. His reasons are also irrelevant for how we should act.

We ought to spend more time on the things that matter and unite us and less on the things that don't matter and divide us.

Politics is the art of the possible, but that means you have to think about changing what is possible, not that you have to accept it in perpetuity.

It's obvious the fix is in. (4.00 / 3)
Today was an exercise in throwing red protein meat substitute to the people.

We are very clear: there will be no tax bill unless there is a tax legislation that gives middle-income families of America the fairness they deserve, the respect that they have earned, and the economic opportunity for creation of jobs, reducing the deficit and stabilizing our economy. I think this choice is clear. I urge our colleagues, and I hope we could have some bipartisan support for middle-income families in America, to vote 'aye' on this important legislation.

Paul, this is kind of an old article and perhaps you have (4.00 / 2)
already read, absorbed, and used it in your work, but I just ran into it today.  It reminds me of some of your work, it is concise and poignant, like an an arrow straight through the heart.

The President's Intellectual Snobbery

"Part of the reason that our politics seems so tough right now," he recently told a group of Democratic donors in Massachusetts, "and facts and science and argument (do) not seem to be winning the day all the time is because we're hard-wired not to always think clearly when we're scared. And the country is scared.".....

Obama clearly believes that his brand of politics represents "facts and science and argument." His opponents, in disturbing contrast, are using the more fearful, primitive portion of their brains. Obama views himself as the neocortical leader - the defender, not just of the stimulus package and health care reform, but of cognitive reasoning. His critics rely on their lizard brains -...

The neocortical presidency destroys the possibility of political dialogue What could Obama possibly learn from voters who are embittered, confused and dominated by subconscious evolutionary fears?...

What must Democrats trying to compete in Pennsylvania or Ohio think when they hear Obama make arguments such as these? Do they realize the tremendous mistake they have made, tying their political fortunes to a leader who makes Michael Dukakis, Al Gore and John Kerry look like prairie populists in comparison?

It is also a precurser to Ted Strickland's remarks.

This article reminded me of your recent post on his self-delusion.  I have to ask, does this man listen to any opponent, populist, progressive, or conservative?  At times he seems as though a self-sufficient universe of one.

Nope. Hadn't Seen It (4.00 / 3)
But it's not the least bit surprising.  This is classic Tony Blairism.  Maggie Thatcher was known as "Tina" for constantly saying "There Is No Alternative", and so Tony Blair's whole schtick (until the whole Bush's Poodele gig opened up) was to do a better job than Margaret Thatcher of being Margret Thatcher--with the 350 page thesis on how to do it and why.

Obama's exactly the same sorry-ass guy.

saw Dylan in October (4.00 / 1)
Saw Dylan and band at The Hill in Ann Arbor in October and they played a killer, show-stopping version of Ballad of a Thin Man to end second set (i.e. regular show. A fantastic performance, best of the night. Other highlights of the show were Just Like a Woman and Desolation Row. Mixing was bad early on pretty much ruining the Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat opener. Like most of his shows this one was up and down. Flat moments and highlights. He mostly played keyboards with some harmonica, very little guitar.

Had a great time.

At least I won't have to spend much time on this article...

Paul, you must have spent some time in writing the two part series on Define Progressive, with lots of bibliography... it took me several days to read it, including the references, and another several days to write some rushed comments on it. By the time I was ready to post an abbreviated answer, the posting time closed.

Can anything meaningful be entertained in Open Left, that has some continuity?

Why do I mention that here? Where else can I?

A National Progressive Alliance, is the only viable solution.

was the scene from That 70's Show where Foreman and Donna put the laxative in some brownies, and convinces everyone that they are pot-laced ("special") brownies, causing all of the gang to simultaneously experience painful, urgent diarreah.  Of course, Obama plays the part of Kelso, with the GOP playing Eric and Donna:

Oh, man, I've gotta admit, that was a pretty good burn. I meant, it had all the elements; you didn't see it coming... parts of it really hurt... I've learned my lesson. I'm not falling for that one again. Eats another brownie.

Why Obama fails, Financial Times = Clintonomics (Neo-Liberalism) (4.00 / 1)
Deaf to History's Rhyme: Why President Obama is Failing
Financial Times Economists' Forum, December 2, 2010
Copyright Thomas I. Palley

The great American novelist Mark Twain observed "history does not repeat itself but it rhymes." Today the rhyme is with the 1930s, and if you don't hear it read FDR's great Madison Square Garden speech of October 1936:

"For twelve years this nation was afflicted with hear-nothing, see-nothing, do-nothing government. The nation looked to government but the government looked away. Nine mocking years with the golden calf and three long years with the scourge! Nine crazy years at the ticker and three long years in the breadlines! Nine mad years of mirage and three long years of despair! Powerful influences strive today to restore that kind of government with its doctrine that that government is best which is most indifferent."

Despite this clarity, the Obama administration insists on hearing a rhyme with the 1990s. That tone deafness has its roots in political choices made at the administration's outset and explains why the administration has stumbled so badly in its first years. If continued, the economic and social consequences will be grave.

In 2008 President Obama captured the nation with a message of change, yet in office he has chosen to deliver change of style rather than change of substance. At the headline level this choice was reflected in his call for bi-partisanship that looked to split the difference with Republicans. In economic policy, it was reflected in the wholesale reappointment of the Clinton administration team led by Larry Summers and Timothy Geithner, a case of continuity not change.

Now, the administration is sinking under failure of its economic policy. That failure is due to its attempt to revive a 1990s paradigm that never worked as advertised and can only deliver stagnation. Painful though it is for Democrats to acknowledge, the reality is the economic policies of President Clinton were largely the same as those of President Bush. On this the record is clear for those willing to see. The Clinton administration pushed financial deregulation; twice reappointed Alan Greenspan; promoted corporate globalization through NAFTA and China PNTR; initiated the strong dollar policy; spoke of the "end of the era of big government"; contemplated privatization of Social Security; and struck down a core element of the New Deal by ending the right to welfare.

The main difference between the Clinton and Bush administrations was the former's willingness to offer some helping-hand policies to cushion the harsh effects of the invisible hand. Differences in outcomes were not policy driven but reflect the fact the Clinton administration enjoyed the good fortune of the Internet investment bubble. It also benefitted from the beginning of the housing bubble when American families had plenty of untapped home equity and credit.

President Obama's fateful decision to go with Clintonomics meant the recession was interpreted as an extremely deep downturn rather than a crisis signaling the bankruptcy of the neoliberal paradigm that has ruled both Republicans and Democrats for thirty years. That implied the recession could be fully addressed with stimulus, which was the same response as the Bush administration to the recession of 2001.
